====================================================================
Hi Dave,

DD> spice heat. Her chilli would sell well in a Pennsylvania diner -- but,
 DD> I'd not buy it.

RH> But you eat it graciously when she serves it--or when it's on the menu,
RH> you volunteer to make it. I don't order chili anywhere, don't want to
 RH> be disappointed.

DD> I cook other things in her kitchen - but, not chilli. My chilli rig
DD> with the spice stash is elsewhere. I also learned that she doesn't
DD> like bell peppers - which is often a component of my chilli. The

I use bells quite a bit, and had a friend in AZ who thought they were
pushing the upper levels of her heat tolerance.

DD> biggest hit I had here (other than a simple chuck roast) was the Swiss
 DD> Chicken.

Calls for an encore performance?

DD> I'm not eligible for the American Legion - my service falls into the
DD> chasm between the end of the Korean police action and Vietnam - and
DD> that period is specifically excluded - Cold War notwithstanding. I

RH> Yes, you do fall into the crack on that one. But, by the same token,
RH> you missed going to either of those two exciting places. (G)

DD> Beale Street in Memphis (before the Tourist Commission got hold of it)
DD> was exciting enough for me. Now it's all cleaned up and "sanitised" to
DD> attract the tourist dollars. I saw many blues legends there in clubs
 DD> for a 50c cover charge or a two-drink minimum. Including B. B. (Riley)
DD> King and Rufus Thomas, Memphis Minnie, the Memphis Jug Band, etc.,
 DD> etc.

I was still in grade school at the time, had never heard of those folks
then.

DD> In other parts of Memphis I saw Johnny Cash - before he left Sun
DD> Records, Carl Perkins (who did the ORIGINAL "Blue Suede Shoes") and
DD> went to a party at Graceland, invited by Elvis himselvis.

I think I first really became aware of Johnny Cash and Elvis in my early
teems--but wasn't allowed to buy any of their music. Dad and Mom did
watch the Johnny Cash show on tv, but there wasn't much of a choice on
other shows so they picked the best of the worst, in their opinions.

DD> could join The Sons of The Legion - off my dad's WWII service and
DD> Phil's Vietnam adventures (plus he has been nearly everything in the
 DD> 40 & 8 as well as Post Commander of Post 32) but, I have a problem
DD> with joining auxiliaries in my head.

RH> Depends, some of them are real go getters in their own right. Our
RH> Auxillary sponsors a 5K fun run, a holiday craft fair and other events.

DD> What they do is what they do. No concern of mine. I keep busy with
DD> chilli suppers and sometimes serving meals at the 8th Street Rescue
DD> Mission (long since moved from 8th St.) or the Helping Hands Shelter.
DD> My next big deal is the Sid Wood Memorial Toy Run -- On Sunday
DD> November 29, 2015, members of the Central Illinois motorcycle
DD> community will gather in the parking lot of the Pipe Fitters Local #
DD> 137 for the annual Sid Wood Memorial Toy Run.
DD> Approximately 70-100 riders will convene for "the oldest and the
DD> coldest" motorcycle charity ride in Springfield with riders from
DD> Springfield, Decatur, Salisbury and other surrounding communities. The
DD> event, was originally started by a local group of motorcycle
DD> enthusiasts to help Contact Ministries collect toys and raise money
DD> for their annual Christmas Giveaway. Sid Wood, a former Contact
DD> Ministries Board member (and local radio personality), enjoyed the
DD> annual toy run so much that it touched the hearts of his fellow
DD> riders, and that with his passing, the event was named the Sid Wood
DD> Memorial Toy Run in his honor. (partially cribbed from my motorcycle
DD> club's web site - the Sid run is one of our big events).

Yes, you do keep quite busy. We'll drop a level in busy-ness after
December 13. Today we were at the city Veteran's day ceremony, followed
by a mid day meal at TX Roadhouse. Steve was at an early morning flag
raising & breakfast at one of the local nursing homes. Had church
nursery duty tonight, plus choir practice so I'm doing Fido a bit later
than usual.

RH> members of the short term (Christmas concert is Dec. 2) Kingdom choir,
RH> composed of Southeastern students and several local church choir
RH> members. Tonight Steve brought chicken from the VFW supper home to
RH> cook--the oven in the building where they meet had gone flaky and we
RH> live the closest to it so................................

DD> Cook for you? Or to take back to the post?

RH> To take back to the post. I had Zaxby's chicken for supper; he said I
RH> ate better. We stopped at Tropical Pickin' Chickin last night--the
RH> meats (chicken for Steve, pork for me) were good but the salad was
RH> laced with cilantro and they were too heavy on the rice portion for me.
RH> Steve never commented on his other side so I don't know how it was.
RH> Lesson learned is to go there for meat (watch out for cilantro in
RH> sauces, etc) but avoid sides.

DD> Or find another venue with meat as good and sides/ingredients that
 DD> agree with you.

There's that possibility but we'd want it to be in WF, instead of
Raleigh or outlying areas. A lot of times we don't get much beyond the
WF city limits in our run arounds.

Catch you later,
Ruth
