Perhaps. I actually think he is a crummy driver, as he
is easily distracted and doesn't notice obvious things.
I agree that having wheels is much better for him, just
not sure about the effect on the public as a whole.

I doubt it: he's been challenged, after, all, on mental
health grounds, plus there is reason to suspect his
general competency (as he has mashed the car at least
once, his fault).

One thing is that if failure became frequent enough to be
noticed, the level of driving ability would probably improve,
which would be desirable. Funny about competency and the
perception of nondrivers. For example, Rosemary lives within
half a mile of the historical society (where she was president
until recently and still writes their materials), town hall
(where she's on the planning board), and the grocery; when she
is in decent condition she likes to walk, but as she is fairly
well known in town, people will stop and inquire if she's lost
her licence for any reason, and she has to assure them that
walking is a voluntary thing, and many don't believe this
possible.

Garlic Chili Achar
categories: Nepal, relish
Yield: 1 batch

1 1/2 c garlic cloves, peeled
1/4 c sesame seeds
1/4 c mustard seeds
1 Tb cumin seeds
1 Tb coriander seeds
1 ts timur (Szechwan pepper)
2 Tb hot chili paste
2 Tb tamarind paste
5 Tb mustard oil, or good olive oil
1 ts freshly ground black pepper
1 pn asafetida
Salt to taste
h - Garnish
1 Tb mustard oil, or olive oil
1 ts fenugreek
10 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
10 dry red chilies
1 Tb mint leaves, minced

In a pan, toast sesame seeds, cumin, coriander, and
mustard seeds. Spread out on a paper towel to cool
down. Grind to a powder. In boiling salted water,
blanch garlic cloves 5 min to soften and remove
intense garlic rawness. Strain garlic cloves from
the blanching water and place in a bowl filled with
ice to prevent from being further cooked. Drain and
reserve in a clean bowl. Slowly dry-roast sesame,
mustard, cumin, and coriander seeds until toasted.
In a blender, mix all the ground toasted seeds,
timur, chili and tamarind paste, oil, black pepper,
asafetida, and salt into a thick pickle paste. Pour
the pickling mixture into the blanched garlic; mix
well. For garnish, in a nonstick pan heat 1 Tb oil,
stir-fry fenugreek and dry red chilies until dark.
Add slices of garlic and fry until light brown.
Pour the garlic-oil mixture and minced mint over
the garlic pickle. Mix well and put in airtight
jar. Allow one week for the marination of garlic
cloves in the pickling mixture within the jar
before serving.
