=================================
Hi nancy,

NB> NB>> Gyros are also available at the sit-down places as one of the
NB> various NB>> options... haven't been to the street fair things in
 NB> ages, either..

RH> You may have to go with the sit down option.

NB> I'm thinking that when I next go for lunch with my friend Donna, that
NB> may be the best choice of places to go... there's a little sit-down
NB> place she likes a lot, as do I... ;)

Give us a write up if you do go.

 RH> Wake Forest is still
RH> small town-ish enough (especially the older section of town, where we
RH> live) that a street fair is still possible. They close off a couple of
RH> blocks of one of the major streets for several hours, have bands, all
RH> kinds of craft and food vendors, etc. It's fun to wander and see what's
RH> for sale (most of it out of our price range for the "antique" stuff).

NB> Oh, they do that various places in Rochester, at times... various
NB> neighborhoods have their festivals, sometimes closing off streets,
NB> sometimes (like our neighborhood) appropriating a small park... I've
NB> just not been getting to them like I used to.

We're sort of off and on-ish about going. If it's "in our back yard"
we're more apt to go than if we've got to drive to get to it. In
Frankfurt our church had a partnership with a German Baptist
congregation so when they took part in a street fest, they invited our
church to join them. We had a good time working, and wandering the fest
that afternoon.

RH> funny, how something becomes such a part of your life you don't
RH> remember how it did. We had guacamole and quesadillas for the first
RH> time in CA, when Steve was stationed at the Presidio of Monterey for
RH> language school. Some things I might be able to recall where/when we
RH> had them for the first time, others, couldn't begin to remember exactly
RH> (could give an approximate timeframe for some, but not others).

NB> It helps remember exact details when it's pegged to some other
NB> memorable occurance, after all.. ;) I think I first tried tripe and
 NB> kidneys
NB> during the time in Syracuse when Richard encouraged me to try cooking
NB> them... fortunately I didn't ruin them so badly that I'd never try

I don't think I've ever tried them. But you're right, having an
association helps remember a food (or event). We had our first calamari
(but not our last) in Monterey as well, in a converted cannery.

NB> again... ;) In fact, both came out fairly decently.. ;) Squid
NB> bodies stuffed and in tomato sauce were probably in the early years
 NB> here in
NB> this house... I don't remember experimenting with them before that.
NB> All three were things I'd never tried before anywhere... Various
 NB> Asian
NB> cuisines, though, I really have no idea when/where the first time was
NB> for any of them... except that Yang's was responsible for many of the
NB> first tastes of things along the way... ;)

Only times I've tried doing anything with squid was to make calamari and
that was when we were living off post at Fort Hood. It's one thing I
leave to others to fix now as they usually know how to prepare it more
efficiently.

RH> Very well, much better than I thought I'd be when I first got the
 RH> diagnosis.

NB> And apparently partly because your body settled back in, and partly
NB> because you were able to get it back to where it could... being aware
 NB> is a useful thing now... :)

Very much so. I had a Zevia soda 2 or 3 days in a row and noticed a
slight uptick (noticed it before) so am laying off them for a few days.
Still not over the 100 mark but I don't need a soda every day.

NB> NB>> True... I've become quite used to the NY laws prohibiting...
NB> easy NB>> to forget until you walk in that some states don't have
 NB> that in
 NB> NB>> place. :)

RH> And then you catch a whiff of tobacco smoke and think "yuck, get me
 RH> out of here!".

NB> Or, at the very least... "yuck... oh well, hope it doesn't get any
NB> worse..." especially places where you don't know of any viable better
 NB> alternatives... :)

Sometimes the best bet for me is to walk out and find another place.

---
Catch you later,
Ruth
