====================================================================
Hi Dave,

RH> RH> We've been getting the Hartley's potato chips in PA since we
RH> RH> were introduced to them in spring of 2010. Before that, it had
RH> RH> been corn chips until Steve discovered his problems. Our Life
RH> RH> Group UPS guy always gets the bag of assorted chips whenever he
RH> RH> does the meal, and we did to go with the sloppy joes we did
RH> RH> yesterday.

DD> I only do corn chips if I am making Frito Pie. And corn tortilla chips
DD> if I am at a Mexican restaurant and using them to dip up salsa - or
 DD> scoop rice and beans.

Don't forget, we lived in the southwest for quite a few years (Texas
from March of 1984 to October of 1986 and Arizona from January 1993 to
March of 2001). Saw hardly any other chips but corn/tortilla.

RH> DD> Have you had the Utz potato chips? They are a Pennsylvania
RH> DD> brand also. I was introduced to them by Bill Utz - one of my
RH> DD> racing friends. I used to pick some up when travelling through
RH> DD> back in my semi-trucking days.

RH> I've not had Utz chip in quite a while. We used to not buy many
RH> potato chips, just corn to go with salsa. Been so long since we've
RH> bought potato chips other than the Hartley's, I couldn't begin to
RH> recall the brand.

DD> I don't do a lot of potato chips of any stripe these days. But, for
DD> those times when I get to jonesing for a salty snack I keep a bag of
DD> J. Higgs (Sav-A-Lot's house brand) on hand. Never did understand the
DD> attraction of Lay's - given the price : taste ratio.

We go thru fits and spurts with them--been picking up the Hartleys
almost every trip to PA for a few years now. The assorted chips (small
bags) we get maybe twice a year or so when appropriate for what we cook
for Life Group. Both beat what I grew up with; my parents bought the
store brand (A&P or Victory Markets) that had enough grease to lube your
car. They weren't a regular buy, usually once or twice during the summer
months.

RH> DD> Anyway, if you have had both could you do a comparison, please.
RH> DD> I've seen you mention the Hartley's brand several times - and
RH> DD> favourably, too.

RH> I'll have to hunt up a bag of Utz's to do a comparison. I think
RH> they're distributed in a wider area than the Hartley's; I've not
RH> seen the latter even in other parts of PA. Have to check if Utz's
RH> are sold down here. One of the couples in our Life Group likes the
RH> Hartley's too; she wasn't at the meeting on Sunday so we sent some
RH> chips home with her husband. She told me that she didn't even share
RH> them. (G)

DD> It's not a big deal - mostly curiosity on my part. Not many in the
DD> Great American Outback have even heard of Utz (or Herr, or Hartley)
 DD> potato
DD> chips --- all from Pennsylvania. And, truth be told, I'd have to try
DD> some Utz again just to be sure that time and distance haven't caused
DD> my rememberey to gild the lily, as it were.

Could be time and distance has skewed your memory. It's a common enough
happening. Remember all the sugar sweetened Kool Ade you drank as a kid?
Would you drink it now? Probably not, as your tastes have grown beyond
that but you've got fond memories of it.

RH> RH> Carrot is supposed to cut the acid of tomato. My MIL usually
RH> RH> puts one in her marinara sauce.

RH> DD> The sweetness of the carrot helps to mask the (mild acid) bite
RH> DD> of the tomato. Most carrots are so sweet that they could be
RH> DD> considered a dessert item - if prepared properly.

RH> But they're not as sweet as a sweet potato, thankfully. I can eat
RH> carrots but I can't eat sweet potatoes.

DD> Something didn't sound right to me so I went and looked it up ....

 DD> Per 100 grams:

 DD> Carrots, frozen, unprepared ---------------------------- Sugar 4.76 g

DD> Sweet potato, canned, syrup pack, drained solids ------- Sugar 5.74 g

 DD> Yam, raw ----------------------------------------------- Sugar 0.50 g

 DD> Read more at http://www.dietandfitnesstoday.com

DD> Some things are apparent to me from this - raw for raw there is not a
DD> lot of difference (.5%) between carrots and sweet potatoes. And
DD> carrots lose sugar when cooked whilst sweet potatoes seemingly gain
DD> sugar - by a substantial percentage. And I (in my mind anyway) had
 DD> made the common
DD> error of many in confusing yams and sweet potatoes - hence the cites
DD> for yams - which are almost devoid of sugar.

I generally buy the sweet potatoes for Steve, regular for me and carrots
for both of us. The bulk of those are eaten raw, unless I'm making beef
stew or something like that. They also get cut up into pea soup if I've
got any hanging around.

 DD> Title: Karen's Sweet Potatoes
 DD> Categories: Potatoes, Dairy
 DD> Yield: 12 servings

 DD> 8 tb Butter
 DD> 1 1/2 c White tables sugar
 DD> 1 1/2 c Brown sugar
 DD> 4 lg Eggs
 DD> 1 c Whipping cream
 DD> 6 c Grated sweet potatoes

My teeth are itching, just reading the recipe. My blood sugar just went
up too. (G)
