Hi Nancy,

RH> They're both good, but quite different styles of chili. Dave Drum
RH> would accept the competition style but would put the family friendly
RH> in the non chili category--it has beans in it.

NB> I seem to remember that he talks about putting beans in chilli... but
 NB> just at the end.

I saw that too; I guess he doesn't enter that in the ICS competitions.

NB> NB>>> A little odd... the judges must have been swayed by novelty...
NB> ;) RH>> More likely swayed by the fact that it wasn't hot.
 NB> NB>> Even worse...

RH> Got to educate those kids as to what real chili is. (G)

NB> Quite. Many people think that chili is the beans.... ;) Maybe with a
NB> bit of meat added, heat optional... ;) Not at all what a real chili
 NB> would be...

Not in the least! We've seen quite a few non chilis entered over the
years but if it's a family's version of chili, who's to argue? I've had
(and made) white chili but prefer a red one; the white was too similar
to bean soup with chicken to be a real chili, IMO.

NB> maybe RH>> give it a try. At least I could see how mine stacks up
NB> against other RH>> serious chili cooks.
NB> NB>> It would be a better comparison, anyway... :)

RH> Yes, and even if I didn't win, we'd have fun. We do now but not
RH> everybody in our church is familiar with competition style chili so
RH> we do a lot of educating with that one.

NB> You'd have fun eating all the other competition style chilis, too...
 NB> :)

For sure!

NB> other things... and one NB>> of the Newman's Own (forget the name at
NB> the moment), which also has NB>> quite a bit of spicing to it...

RH> There's a story behind the chili topping the spaghetti; I'll have to
RH> tell you some time. It was good that the chili was the family friendly
RH> style as we weren't into much heat at the time, the kids even less so.

NB> I think I vaguely remember you mentioning it before... but I've
NB> certainly forgotten the details... :) If you weren't into much heat
NB> at the time, you wouldn't have had the hotter chili around anyway,
 NB> though, I'd guess... :)

And I don't think the friends we were with were particularly into it
either, altho she's originally from New Mexico.

NB> RH>> We're expecting more nasty weather this week so may pull one
NB> out. RH>> Steve has already pulled some pea soup out & I'm thinking
NB> of a "throw RH>> it all in the pot" stew to use up some odds and
 NB> ends. That'll be good RH>> on a cold & wet night.

NB> Y'all are getting much worse weather than we are, for sure... how are
NB> you weathering it...? I saw where Steve rescheduled the doctor visit
NB> from today... wise thinking... :) The pea soup and the odds and
NB> ends stew both sound like tasty meals for the season... :)

We did OK; our power stayed on so we stayed warm and well fed. I made a
broccoli-cheese soup the other night (have to tweak the recipe some) but
haven't done the odds & ends stew yet. Steve is putting a faux granite
finish on the kitchen counter tops so we're doing minimal cooking for a
few days. Went out today for the main meal (see note to Dale) but will
probably do a one pot (and microwave) meal tomorrow, as well as a no
fuss breakfast & lunch.

---
Catch you later,
Ruth
