BA> Replying to a message of PETER COGGON to ALEXANDER KORYAGIN:

 >>>> Part 2 of 2...

PC> London...but as the war plan was not keeping to the timetable he
PC> then consented to bombing London and not caring where the bombs
PC> landed..then came vee twos..and then the missle which took out
PC> a block. That gave rise to England's "Bomber Harris" who headed
PC> Bomber Command...he wipedout Dresden, when Hitler wipeout a small
PC> residential town <the name of the town escapes me>

BA> Coventry wasn't exactly a 'small residential town.' FWIW, the Brits
BA> knew what the target was because they could read the German radio
BA> traffic. They allowed the Germans to hit Coventry because they felt
BA> that a major defensive effort there would have tipped off the Germans
BA> that the Brits were reading their
 BA> codes.

Ah..I did mention it to Alexander. Thanks for the name of the
City of Coventry. I did it with tongue in cheek, but then that
is the sprite of the people at the time, as I look at the pictures
my father took in France, before and during the miracle at Dunkirk.

Exactly... Mr. Chruchill was up all night trying to decide about
that. And when he decided to "allow" it to happen he was troubled
all the more. I got that information form his nurse during that
period. She retired here, and used to sail a lot with me before
moving out to the west coast, where I lost touch with her. The
war wasn't kind to her either...same syptoms as my parents.

 PC> The goal of
PC> Hitler by making that decision was to force public support to turn
PC> and demand an end to the war on the terms of Nazi Germany. Same
PC> happened in Dresden..same in Brelin, and well we all know what
PC> happened in Hiroshima and Nakisaki...it shortened the war in the
 PC> Pacific.

BA> The war in the Pacific was already effectively over when the nukes
BA> were dropped. Japanese air and naval power had been destroyed,
BA> the major portion of their remaining effective ground combat
BA> forces were on the Chinese mainland with no way to return
BA> them to Japan. Over 2/3 of the pre-war Japanese merchant
BA> fleet was on the bottom of the ocean.
BA> It would have been perfectly feasible to starve Japan into surrender.
BA> FWIW, Japan had already made overtures WRT ending the Pacific war
BA> before the nukes were dropped - unfortunately the US didn't find out
BA> about it until about 9 months after the war had ended
BA> (details in "The Codebreakers" by David Kahn).

Whatever the Allies decided to do, they did it. Thats history
that can be debated for whatever, and how many years. Just not
in their history to surrender.

AK>> People who have been living in such a stress for decaded cannot think
AK>> as normal adequate humans. So we hardly can expect sound actions
AK>> from both sides of conflict in Palestine.

From WW2 to the Middle East. Agreed with what you say here. Easy
for us to sit and keyboard our expert opinions, which doesn't address
the whys and why nots and the twisted mess both sides have made for
themselves. Both have elements that have fostered extreme declarations
in the past, and both have issued statements supportive of their passed
declarations as being not a bargaining point. SO... to further the
stress and etc... it is a horrible thought that everyone needs to
carry military hardware, just going to work. It is all so sad,
as if they could attain PAZ... their ecnomy would just skyrocket
with of all things tourists. Now...tourists have to duck when ordered
as bullets and rockets pass over their heads coming and going to targets.

BA> No plan survives first contact with the enemy - von Moltke.

How true ... Oh well, I did enjoy the chat Bob, as I did with
Alexander in Russia. It would be nice sometime to get over to
Russia and experience Moscow. What a city.

  ttfn

  Peter
