American soldiers after the defeat of Saddam have been in vain."  Or
something similar to that.

worse is redundant, 'more and more' is even more redundant.  I inserted

I'm not really sure why I did it.

"Democracy in Iraq has never been possible."  'The' is unnecessary
and incorrect in that it indicates a specific thing; democracy as such
is not a specific thing, it's more of a concept or an idea.  'A democracy'
would be correct, but the 'a' - while it is non-specific - is also
unnecessary.  "The establishment of democracy in Iraq has never been
possible" or "The establishment of a democratic government in Iraq has
never been possible" would both be correct.

You switched tenses in the middle of the sentence (from 'was' to 'is'),
'is' in this case should be 'was.'  I do that myself on occasion.
