Hi, PETER COGGON! How are you?
on Tuesday, 20 of March, you wrote to ALEXANDER KORYAGIN about
"Re: Hello Alexander [1/2]"

AK>> Stalingrad was renamed in 1961 to Volgograd (city on the Volga river),
AK>> its original name till 1925 was Czaricin (city of the czarina). Until
AK>> now its name is Volgorgad.

PC> I wondered why they changed it ? It became quite famous for this
PC> great battle that torn the heart out of the German army.

Khrushchev imho was very jealous for his fame, as any authoritarian ruler
at his place. He announced that all bad things in the USSR had happened only
because of Stalin. Actually it was an order to remove all memory about
Stalin. There were millions of Stalin statues, all were destroyed, the book
were rewritten, the songs were recomposed, films were shelved. Only when
Khrushchev was overthrown some memory was restored. But Stalin had been
tarnished so greatly that Volgograd preserved its name until now.

AK>> Leningrad before 1924 (and before 1917) had Russian name Petrograd
AK>> (city of Piter), but in 1991 it was renamed to Petersburg (German
AK>> name). It is a grim irony that after the WW2, with Germans, the city
AK>> got German name, not Russian one. For defenders of Leningrad it was a
AK>> hard blow.

PC> I thought it was St. Petersburg? Or am I mistakened? I think
PC> the winter palace is located there? Are there many German people
PC> now living in the Area around St. Petersburg?

Petersburg was renamed to Petrograd after beginning WW1 with Germany. A long
story of a strange worship before Germany was over. Imho nobody had any pity
about that name-change (to Petrograd) because such a worship was artificial
and imposed. The Winter Palace of course is located there.

[Sorry, skipped]
PC> Yes I remember Madame Curie ... even today her notes and everything
PC> is still hot radiation. It was so horrible to see her last
PC> pictures and realize only today what she was dieing from.

But nevertheless she lived quite long - for 67 years despite the fact she
constantly exposed herself to the very radioactive materials as radium for
instance. It seems too me that the main danger is not in radiation itself,
but when radiactive particles get into the body and blood. The amount of
radium was very small.

AK>> By the way I observed another interesting thing. That many calamities
AK>> on the Earth are happening when the big leader suddenly dies, and his
AK>> small gray assistant comes to power. He struggles to be as important
AK>> as his Big forerunner and as a rule the war and calamities are
AK>> very probable. Roosevelt -> Truman = atomic bombardment; Kennedy ->
AK>> Jonson = full scale Vietnam war; Rabin ->? Intifada...

PC> Yes... I guess thats why Lenin did not want Stalin to become leader.
PC> He recognized him for what he was. The reason things happen is
PC> the new leaders want to flex a bit of muscle and feel great...but
PC> only on the backs of their citizens, or killing someother country's
PC> people.

But the great one on purpose get a gray small vice-chairman so
that the small guy would do unimportant work and meddle not into His work.
In this way the great one feels himself more comfortable.

PC> I always thought the UN stopped all that kind of stuff, but ...well..
PC> the track record will have to be assessed to see if the UN needs to be
PC> revamped or what?

Well, the human conscience is aslo not very good in preventing bad things,
but it seems to me that in this case the profit is greater than expenses.

AK>> It seems to me that Iraq was like an atom of uran 235, and American
AK>> invasion was like a neutron. It completely changed the stability of
AK>> the country, and I think Iraq inevitably is going to split into three
AK>> parts. Nothing can stop it because there is no anything which
AK>> could unite the Iraqi people into a single nation. May be exept a
AK>> military dictatorship which must be even more cruel one than Saddam's.

PC> Yes. It is a very sad time for everyone. Something is going to
PC> rush in when the US is forced out, and it is not going to be
PC> friendly to anyone.

Most bad news for the side who at first bombs and then wants peace that
there is such a notion as a revenge or requital. I remember a classic
example, when Napoleon seized Moscow he met with the partisan war in Russia.
He was outraged and send to Russian emperor a letter with a proposal to end
the war. The emperor answered nothing, but Kutuzov, the famous Russian
commander answered, to truce envoy, that Russia people cannot end the war
for they are not had begun to fight yet. So Bush must read the books of
wisdom. They say that "if you unsure you can win the war do not start it."
But alas Bush was sure. Although not knowing the law does not prevent from
punisment.

in contrast to knowing the law of course ;-)

AK>> I wonder about snow. Sutton located at 44 degree latitude - that's
AK>> more than 10 degrees to south than Moscow location! Like the Black Sea
AK>> in Russia. ;)

PC> What about snow? You do get snow..or not?

Of course we must get a snow in winter,a frost, frozen lakes, minus 20C, and
so on. This winter was unprecedented.

AK>> The Simcoe lake is frosen during the winter? Really?

PC> Yes frozen solid right across. Starts to freeze in January these
PC> years passed...usd to be early...but weather patterns changed.

I think it is quiete cold for this latitude because of Appalachian Mountains
ridge which reflects the Gulf Stream from you.

PC> It melts some few days before the start of summer. My wife
PC> was swimming once in May ....that was 7 years ago...not now.

In Russian we also have so called walrus (winter-swimmers). ;)

PC> Thank you again Alexander for the chat. Regards to you
PC> and your family. I am off to bed now, I have some wood for
PC> the fire, and I hope in a few days, to be able to order
PC> a fuel oil for the furnace to be delievered.

PC> ttfn ...from Lake Simcoe... :)

What about the wind at Simcoe? Is it strong and northen? Do you have calm
days?
