Hi, Alexander!  Recently you wrote in a message to Ardith Hinton:

          On our system, it has three or four.  But I'm seeing a UUCP address
on your messages, meaning... if I understand correctly... that they're gated.
No big deal at my end.  I get stuff the same way from people in North America
& the number of kludge lines is fairly similar in both cases.  The difference
seems to be that when I'm writing to you, my computer uses Fidonet protocol &
your computer (or somebody else's along the way) needs to have spelled out in
detail what the protocol is.  Some of the things which appear as kludge lines
to you, such as origin lines, are visible to me as a matter of course.

          Anyway, thanks for sharing what you see at your end....  :-)

          Uh-huh.  It's my guess you are a parent, or an unusually perceptive
individual... or both!  We're seeing a lot of wonderful educational games now
which won't run on old computers.  You-know-who has the newest one.  I should
have seen the writing on the wall when she was four years old & somebody gave
us an antique with a black-and-white monitor.  They'd asked Dallas to sell it
for them.  It was worth only $25 but it ran MATH RABBIT & READER RABBIT.  ;-)

          I've certainly noticed that with some of the big, busy echoes.  The
one I alluded to earlier went from four hundred messages a day to none at all
within a few weeks.  There are other, quieter echoes which are still chugging
along after more than a decade because they attract different people....  :-)

          Yes, I think it is important to keep in mind what the goal is for a
particular echo... and I consider that part of my job as a co-moderator.  I'm
reminded of an incident I observed many years ago.  A student teacher had the
kids performing plays they'd made up.  Her faculty adviser asked her what the
goal of the lesson was & she had no answer.  It seems so obvious, yet it's so
often overlooked.  I can't reasonably expect other folks to remain "on task",
as we say in teacherese, if the point of the exercise isn't clear to me.  :-)

          Could be!  Evidently he was a student minister in some denomination
where the ability to quote passages from the Bible was considered an asset...
so that's what he did.  He didn't have much to say in his own words....  :-))
