Bjorn, there are heritary elements that lead to not using calories as fast as
others.  This in times of famine are things that tend to allow for survival
so, it does happen and is genetic.  That doesnt mean it's an excuse. 

One of the things several cab drivers asked us as we chatted and they found out
we hadnt been 'home' for a long time was if folks seemed 'fatter' and we said
yes.  They came back (all of them) that they used to only be called for trips
over 2 miles,  Now they get them for 1/2 mile trips *all the time*.  Scarey. 
USA folks seem to be getting so little exercise that they now object to a 1/2
mile walk????  Ok I can understand that if it's with HUGE luggage and 110F
(40C or so or a bit more) but 'common'?

*sigh*.  One of the transitions I had to make to Japan was not having a car and
getting groceries home to my Cho.  I got used to a personal grocery cart and
was able to use the Tonoo Market formost common needs (only 1/2 mile away but
a very steep hill on the way back home).  3 miles to the local commisary
(Military grocery store).  Carefully loaded Charlotte's backpack with
increasing but *sensible* amounts for her age to help out.  I can carry 60lbs
inthe pull cart and another 20-25 on my back and she can manage (now age 11)
1/3 her weight on a pull cart easily. Don (husband) came on big trips when
stocking up for me being at sea for several months.

Hehe started selecting foods more for weight value of the packing pretty fast.
Canned goods became rare.  Because space was also limited, prepackaged ones
got more rare (Charlotte carries the cookies!).  Took to shopping 2-3 times a
week on the way home for fresh foods at Tonno Market.  Since any meat there
but 'seafoods' are expensive, we shifted to seafoods largely.  Getting beef or
pork was more expensive and required 3 miles each way (6 mile round trip)
which I could do in small amounts to/from work but had to be loaded in a
backpack on my bicycle and the route made it dangerous to carry too much at
once.

Grin, my 127 lbs is a bit higher than my looks I will grant.  I have a decent
amount of muscle mix in there so am a bit trimmer than that will sound.  I
dont 'jog' or 'run' unless being chased by a big dog orhaving to get ready for
those dratted military PT tests.

Most folks I know stateside, do not have these same shopping problems, but they
do not even walk far at all without a load unless the car is broken.

Smile, Saturday I take Charlotte to the local mall (we call it the Ginza but it
isnt the Tokyo one of fame).  It's a mere 2 miles each way.  We need filters
for the fish tank, fish food, pure *fun*, and will probably go up to Tonoo
market as it's only a mile further, and check out the fresh fish and the local
produce.  Besides, it's hitting upwards towards as much as 43C inthe next week
or so and we want to go and get Charlotte some shorts and stuff as she's grown
like a weed and hasnt any that fit.
