RC>>>>>> It will be a harder sell because you would have state and
RC>>>>>> local sales taxes to add in.

RW>>>>> Ray seemed to indicate that state sales taxes would be
RW>>>>> abolished. If so, that makes the FairTax easier to swallow.

RY>>>> Ray wishes that were true, but it's not. However the
RY>>>> predictions are that the states will follow suit.

RW>>> Yeah but, those are only predictions. What the greedy states
RW>>> will do is a different matter. IE; Texas doesn't have a state
RW>>> income tax, but she does charge outragious taxes on property to
RW>>> make up for it. I own similar sized houses in CA and TX and I
RW>>> pay a third more in taxes for my Texas 'retirement' home.

RY>> Predictions is all you get, sorry.

RW> I like reassurances of little or no after effects, before I get
 RW> screwed. :o)

Can't say as I blame you there.. but like I said what the states do is up to
them, that's how the system is set up.

RY>> . The FairTax is federal, only. To clarify, the states will
RY>> probably follow suit and adopt a similar system when it sees how
RY>> well the Federal system functions.

RW> Or not...California is stubborn that way. They think they're leades in
RW> the field of 'screwing the public'.

That's true, and the pubic lets them..

RY>>>> . it's a lot more sensible, and more people will be paying in
 RY>>>> to the system.

RW>>> The problem with that theory is, California for instance, will
RW>>> increase it's sales and property taxes to offset any income tax
RW>>> losses. Unless the FairTax thingy excludes the states (which it
RW>>> can't) from doing that, there's no use in passing it.

RY>> NO they won't the state laws will remain the same, until they are
RY>> changed. That's the province of the voters.

RW> Actually, the province of the voter's representatives. In California
RW> the voters are screwed for sure, as their state reps are a liberal
RW> majority. They like to tax, and tax, and tax, and tax, and ad
 RW> infinity.

You left out the "spend" part...:-)

RC>>>>>> I do not think the taxes businesses pay on their sales and
RC>>>>>> profits will change, so its not really a GOP only thing.
RC>>>>>> As for the impoverished one solution is to exempt them from
RC>>>>>> or reduce the tax they would pay at the register.

RW>>>>> They, well everyone, has an exemption included in that plan.
RW>>>>> Taxes aren't paid until you get to whatever sum they determine
RW>>>>> to be the 'poverty' level in spending.
RY>>>> They pay, but they get reimbursed for it monthly.
RW>>> I'd rather they not pay at all and save them the hassle.

RY>> I can understand this, but.. Exemptions cause looppholes.
RY>> Loopholes cause lobbyists. Lobbyists often do not do good things
 RY>> for the average voter.

RW> It'd be easy to identify them. As with those on welfare, a card can be
RW> issued that will ID any tax level payer.

RY>> What hassle, anyways? You file (much as you do now) the size of
RY>> your household, and you get a check based on that (or EFT) Same
RY>> amount, until the number changes.

RW> Yes, that would be like a W4. Not everyone has taxes automatically
RW> deducted from their pay. As an independant contract worker, I got full
RW> pay and only paid my taxes quarterly.

I forgot about that.. a W-4 is "voluntary"...<snrk>

RY>> Compared to tryng to determine at the register what's exempt and
RY>> what's not, this is a lot easier.

RW> I think that is yet to be determined.

O, I'll go along with that.. but as I said to Dan, it slows the lines..

RY>> I've had occasion to wait behind people with a Shopping cart with
RY>> items that were both exempt and not from the Food Stamp program.
RY>> I'd as soon not do that. pay the tax on it all, and get the money
RY>> back you're supposed to get on the first of the month.

RW> I've been there too. It's just as easy to move to the next check out.

RY>> As the bill is structured now (and it may change) the "prebates"
 RY>> range from $187.43/mo for a single person to $741.75/mo for a
RY>> family of eight (larger than that, add $62.48/person/mo).

RW> Interesting. Those people who don't have any documented income, get
RW> paid $187.50 a month free and clear.

Yup.. and leaves the undocumented guest worker in the cold..
