Then you havent been reading the replies sent to you very well.  Even just
scanning this thread it was obvious at the start that you were inferred as
'having been there'.  Frank, you should have corrected that right at the start
of this month long thread, not now.  Your credibility is now in question as to
what possible experience you may have had when it comes to the memories of
folks who's parents lived through it.

I can read.  Your comments were NOT misinterpreted by the others for whom
english is a 'second language'.

He went where he was told.  Europe obviously due to his language skills.  Radio
operator was a natural for him and the best place to put a person who could
intercept and translate messages.  Nothing mystical about it.

He was the one who helped my brother and me get the right information for our
clearances as he had 'interesting times' with that too.  The family
'Americanized' the Von Papen name when they came to the USA.  'Uncle' Von
Papen was alive and well and heading some sort of thing in Istanbul and still
largely respected in the Nazi regime though family tradition says that
faultered with Hitler at some point.  Dad told them straight up when he joined
about it all and that he'd never met the man being born here (USA).  (Von
Papen isnt actually an 'uncle' BTW but some 2nd cousin or something, just
called 'uncle' in my father's family long ago).

The 'family tradition' information on 'Uncle' comes from 'Aunt' (great aunt to
me) Elise who I bear the middle name of.  Used to live in Vermont and my
memories of her are sparse as I was probably 6 or 7 when Mom took us up there.
I recall a yard with a blueberry bush and being told i was welcome to eat them
by a gracious lady with a slighty thick accent.  I remember it was cold (being
by then several years in Miami FL) and we went in something close to summer
(no snow, which I'd wanted to see).  Aunt Elise says there was a falling out
with Hitler but that 'Uncle Von Papen' was the old type German 'with honor'
which was why it happened.

Web pages dont totally support that though he was aquitted at the nuremburg
trials (one of 2 I think).
