Ärende: "Unlisted sysops"
=========================
PL>> That is not BBS technology, IMO. Just another FTN<>Nesgroup converter.

BF> I know that many people, even experienced fidonet
BF> sysops, still haven't understood what JamNNTPd is all
BF> about and how it works. I guess it's the "news" thing
 BF> that confuses y'all.

Not confused... know exactly what it is... have a copy of it sitting on my
system.

BF> JamNNTPd uses the JAM message base, just as any other
BF> BBS program, you can even use both at the same time. It
BF> is my local copy of the message base, and everything on
BF> it is transported via FTN tossers and mailers.

yup... I know that.

BF> It *is* my BBS (Bulletin Board System), the only
BF> difference from 20th century technology is that I don't
BF> use a local client to retrieve data from the message base
BF> and then format it to human readable text, so that you
BF> can use a dumb terminal to read it, it uses a local
BF> client that retrieves the data and transforms it to a
BF> format that any newsreader can turn into human readable
 BF> text.

It is no different than an offline mail system... just a different method of
obtaining the messages, therefore it is not
-the- BBS, just a means of accessing a portion of the BBS, like I said, in all
principle, no different than QWK mail.

There is alot more to a BBS than what is contained in a JAMbase. The comparison
of retrieving messages in that way to a BBS cheapens the idea of a BBS itself,
IMO. Call it something else, because it sure is in no way a BBS, wether it uses
the JAMbase ot not.

As to the idea of somebody retrieving mail in such a way being considered a
SysOp... not a chance. Somebody using it to retrieve mail in that fashion even
being considered to be given "point" status is ludicrous.

Now... at this point you're probably thinking I reject the whole idea of that
package... I do not...I just classify it as what it is, and offline system
-for- a BBS. I do intend to offer it for BBS users who like mail, but not
before they have established an account on the -actual- BBS itself... I am
going to use it as an -extension- of the BBS, not a replacement. The
continuing of the availability of echoes through that manner will also hinge on
their activity on the BBS itself as well... users who don't call for 90 days to
the BBS itself are deleted... when their name is deleted for innactivity on
the BBS itself, so will their access to mail from the BBS in that manner as
well, unless they are contributing to the BBS by posting to the local areas as
well... same as they would lose their QWK mail for not logging in. I run a BBS,
not a post office... the idea is user interactivity and community.

Phil
