Ärende: Where where you when the Towers came down?

 CS>> 'Japan Carol'.

RW>> And all this time I thought you were signing off with double
 RW>> kisses...

CS> Grin, the name has been asked about a few times. Here's the real
CS> truth of it, as told many times but you wouldnt know because you've
 CS> never asked.

CS> Back when I came in to the military, we predated such real 'internet'
CS> as folks have now. PC's didnt exist and only a few people had
CS> computers at home and no one knew what would grow later. For the
CS> mass majority, 'computers' had 'vacumn tubes and lots of flashing
 CS> lights' like old 1950's SCI-FI movies.

Jeeez...you must have joined in the mid-70s then. I had a computer of my
own by 79 and worked with them at Cubic Corp until 78, when I moved on.

 CS> Real SYSOPS ran mainframes.

Or, at least had access to them.

CS> There was no Fidonet. ARPANET existed though and had changed names
CS> and had 'secured itself' from the university mainframes withonly
CS> touch points left. There were no virii. Hacker was a good term for
CS> one who checked out programs to find the flaws and helped people fix
CS> the problems. Set the scene well enough?

Yeup...Im familiar with the old school technology. :o)

CS> Us Sysops chatted at night during the deadtime on the mainframes with
CS> one another. Because the total line sent could be only 60
CS> characters, and it was hard to tell the sending site, we added by
CS> convention our initials to the end.

Just think, if you thought about it, you could have invented the FTN
address that was non-existant at the time.

CS> Normally that would be enough but there was another on the 'world
CS> wide ARANET outgrowth version' named Charlie Parker. I was Carol
CS> Pape. So, we monikered me xx (female genetics as xx chromosomes).
CS> There was a later fellow who became 'xy' as he had a simular problem.
CS> There were so few of us, that this was enough. It simply saved
 CS> character space.

See, I wouldn't have that problem with my first name. There was Roy T
something here in Fidonet, but I don't recall any others in all these
years.

CS> Years later, I joined Fidonet and added the xx to Carol to be xxcarol
CS> and the few of us who had joined this new thing, would find each
CS> other that way (known initials). That obviously didnt work by 1990
CS> but it became my moniker.

CS> I think it was 1991 before anyone pointed out to me it might be
CS> looking like a 'kiss' and I was literally confused, but after a few
CS> moments i realized, 'yeah, sure looks like that dont it?'. I knew so
CS> well it was my old 'sig' enchanced due to not being so limited in
CS> characters that it had simply not occured to me what it looked like.

I think I had mentioned it to you once or twice before.

CS> Chuckle, I dont mind if people think I'm tossing kisses. I've known
CS> for 16 years now that some think this. But the origin of the 'xx' is
CS> totally to clarify me and Charlie Parker, added later to be xxcarol
CS> so the rest would know it was me and the Military network folks now
CS> gone from that small group.

Yeah, but you'll never get lost, no matter where you go if you continue to
use that sig.

CS> It serves now to make a nice way to say 'hello' and deal with the
CS> rare other 'carol' out there. If guys think I'm blowing them a kiss,
CS> well maybe sometimes i am as well! ;-)

I saw your photo on a web site the other day (you know which one) and if I
were available, you could throw me a kiss anytime.
