========================
*** Quoting Herman Neut from a message to Carol Shenkenberger ***

CS> Works for me. For all you and I come from other places, we have
CS> ties we can see in one another. Nautical folks live in one
CS> another's pockets far too much to not be such. When you snore at

CS> other and are a mere 2ft away, you learn some things that you
CS> just cant put in words (or at least, takes so many you cant do it
 CS> here)

HN> I know;-)

Yup. We type much in these messages mostly to inform the others reading
because *they* do not understand this. We already know it down deep where it
counts.

HN> I might be a little older than you are and from another place, there a
HN> many ties. As a retired navy cdr, I know you people far from home at s
HN> and how you think and work 24hrs/day, 7 days/week with a big team were
HN> team members cannot ignore the other team members. You are constant wo
HN> with people and capital sophisticated equipment. You talk with the
HN> crewmwmbwrs at their worksite (technicians doing repairs at night), in
HN> cabin, at the department office, in the workshop, in the CPO mess, in
HN> PO mess and in other places. You know your people and how it is with t
HN> family at home.
HN> Not a "9to5" job ;-)

Absolutely. The only real difference I can percieve is you retired as an
Officer (a fairly senior one, Department Head definatly, smaller ship may have
been the CO at least once I take it?). Your service may not use a Navy
'Chief' the same as the US ones do, but it sounds like they do?

In you time at Norfolk though, you'd have seen that and know what I am and how
to figure that in. I spent most of my tme this morning (0530-0715) training
some 'JO's (young ensigns and LTJGs O1-O2 level) who were messing up. The
'command duty officer' told me to have them do pier sweepers because they
couldnt get their people out there on time. Herman, I disobeyed that. I
pulled them aside (after i managed to get them awake and down to the
quarterdeck) and told them point blank, I didnt want them out there with
brooms cleaning the pier because they had lost control of their own E1-3 and
have their own E1-3 snickering at them as they cleaned in front of them. 'Now
get your people fucking out there or if thats too hard, start sweeping but it
means you are incapable of leadership and next duty day, I'll post your
personal name on my watchbill for all to see as a pier sweeper'. (I did NOT
say that where any Non-Chiefs could hear it).

Grin the CDO tried to change it but I told him to back down. 'I got it'.
Shortly after, I had 20 pier sweepers (needed 6 only but hell, works for me).
Then I pulled all the E5/6 that worked for those JO's and had a field day on
them for leaving those young officers butts out in the coldest of breezes and
had them all cleaning the berthings and taking out the trash so we'd be clean
for turnover.

Ah well, normally it's not so hard. Just an abberation day corrected and part
of my normal job. TRain the JO's so they do understand what their senior
officers *expect* of them and develop them so they will one day be ready to be
LCDR's and CDR's, and deal with enlisted juniors as well while teaching them
how to do that 'right' so they *want* to work for them.

HN> And I know the US Navy, and their people, including their family.
HN> Altogether I spend a few months in Norfolk, Virginia Beach and its
HN> surroundings. I met many in the officers clubs, as wel in the CPO club
HN> even in Little Kreek;-)
HN> Not to forget visiting our "host ship" and vice versa while lying at t
HN> piers. But most times our hosts did visit our ship. You know why? We h
HN> a bar in our messes, so we could talk more relaxed;-)

Grin, a really cool thing too that can be! Visited a French ship once and got
to go to the CPO mess. They brought out all the good wine. All the CPOs from
my ship peeking at me (senior one, umm, ok?) I askd if they had beer as i'm a
beer type and that kinda broke the ice. We had fun but didnt get blitzed. We
had to take a RHIB boat back and climb up rope acom ladder stuff <G>. It was
when deployed to the persian gulf.

I'll part company though on O'clubs. The few times i've been in them, they are
just too stuffy. I feel like I gotta point out my pinky when swilling a beer!

CS>> the people for generations to come. That was only learned later

HN>> Exact what I'm telling you.

HN>> It has happened, but may _never_ be a reason for any celebration.
HN> Yes, we are teachers too;-)
HN> In fact we have to be all-round...

Very much so.
                                       xxcarol
