RC>> Well if we dont make anything in this country, guess big business
RC>> isnt doing as you say? Unionized labor was once a good thing, as
RC>> with everything, a balance is needed and union labor has had the
RC>> balance tipped well into their favor for too long and so long
RC>> that it has hampered the competitiveness of the companies they
RC>> work at. This is why you have seen manufacturing and jobs go
RC>> overseas.
ml> nope... that is pure greed... nothing less... corporate and
ml> stockholder greed... corporations no longer have the responsibility to
ml> take care of their customers... their job now days is to fleece their
ml> customers and pay their stockholders...
RC> So you are saying that Ford, Chrysler, GM with their unionized help
RC> can compete with the non-union competition, such as but not limited
RC> to the Japanese and Korean brands?
no... i don't really like unions, either... in many cases, they have
contributed to costs going up more than is necessary which has lead to those
products being priced out of range of folk who used to be able to purchase
them...
ml> it is all about the benjamins... nothing more and nothing less...
RC> Business has always been about making money.
no... greedy business has always been about making money and recording higher
and higher earnings in each reporting period... there's only so much money to
go around!
many businesses that i know of are in business to provide a needed service and
make _some_ money... take a mom'n'pop grocery store, for instance... many of
them are in place to serve the local neighborhood so that everyone doesn't have
to drive miles to get groceries and other needed products... sure, they want to
do more than break even and i have no problem with that... however, when you
look at companies, like walmart and lowes hardware for instance, that mark
products up 100% or more, that is just plain wrong... that's like you
purchasing the components to build a complete computer and setting the sales
price at double the cost (100% markup)... well, guess what... you won't be
selling many computers at that price... either that or you'll start using
lowend components in an effort to get the price down for your target buyers...
ml> how many companies/corporations do you truely see taking care of their
ml> workforce with all the benefits and such bestowed on them by the
ml> republicans? i see none... what i see is them shoveling below federal
ml> poverty level wages and not caring one iota because there's always
ml> another potential employee out there that is willing to settle for
ml> less than poverty existance :(
RC> Whats a fair wage?
i'd say that a fair wage is a wage that at least allows someone to live above
the federal poverty level... how that wage fits in with the cost of living in
their locale is another matter altogether...
RC> I am told a wage that is twice or 2.5 times the existing minimum
RC> wage isnt enough?
well, can you live on $300 a week before taxes?? that's 7.50/hr @ 40hrs/wk...
in this area, that's the starting wage for many companies... at 50 working
weeks a year, that's $15000 before taxes are taken out... say 20% is taken out
and that leaves you with $12000 to play with... so, can you?
RC> Labor costs is exactly why outsourcing occurs, do you want to make
RC> it worse?
no, that is wrong... it isn't just labor costs... there is also the cost of
paying the shareholders and the federal government hasn't helped that,
either... in fact, thay've made it worse with their 401k stuff which forces
folk to gamble their retirement funds on the stockmarket... and that's exactly
what that is... gambling...
RC> They already are experimenting with self service checkout and
RC> ordering at fast food restaurants. Many stores have adopted self
RC> serve checkouts, bye bye cashiers.
and thus no jobs for those people to work at... so what do they do now? how can
they support themselves and contribute back to their neighborhood? become crack
dealers and prostitutes?? riight...
ml> i made the statement, somewhere, before, that the republicans were for
ml> business and that the democratics are for the people...
RC> Well ok, let them be for the people until they vanquish business,
RC> then where will you be?
no, that's going to the opposite extreme... it never fails to cause me wonder
wny folk have to jump from one extreme to the other in their efforts to make
their points... yes, i've done it, too... anyway, it is the middle line that is
where we should be... folk making a living and affording the products their
company produces (for one thing) and companies making enough to cover their
expenses and make a little profit for future needs...
RC> Didnt you start truck driving, who created the need for you to
RC> drive that truck?
i went to school and got my class a cdl, yes... the need will always be
there... someone has to drive the trucks... that won't ever stop...
ml> that statement was directed at the teachings of the 60's, 70's and
ml> 80's that the benefits that companies garnered by republican
ml> ideals and methods would trickle down to their employees and thus
ml> the employees would be taken care of by the companies... as such,
ml> the employees should vote republican so as to not "bite the hand
ml> that feeds them"... sadly, it is all a total crock...
RC> Blindly mandating wage levels to overcome a income level
RC> designation wont work either.
i never said anything about blindly doing anything... that's just as stupid as
the existing situation and circumstances...
RC> You are better off investing in education.
investing with what?!!? if one doesn't have anything to invest with, how is one
supposed to invest in anything?? do not suggest loans and credit... that's
another trap on the unsuspecting and one that only leads down the road to
indebtedness... remember, banks are businesses, too... they charge you to use
your money to make themselves money... oh goody! i feel so priviledged... i'm
gonna pay you to store my money so that you can make money with it and if you
pay me anything it won't be diddlysquat... oh! and if i don't keep a certain
minimum balance, you're going to charge me more money to store my money??
effoff!!
and then there's that thing about the education... many folk come out of
schools just as ignorant and stupid as they went in... all they have is
(another) piece of wallpaper that doesn't mean foo... in some cases, folk come
out more ignorant and stupid due to some factors... i've seen friends go to
school and take, for instance, psychology courses... then they start
questioning and second guessing everything over and over and not getting
anywhere... look at the folk taking computer related courses... where are the
nice jobs they are supposed to be getting when they get out? you've practically
got to have a phd to even work on any automobiles, these days... do you know of
any mechanics that truely make a living at what they do? i don't... they are
all in debt to the banks and the companies they work for are "going by the
book" and charging for X hours of time when the job doesn't take much more than
half that time...
i personally know several individuals who have spent a lot of time investing in
their education... they've got this sheepskin and that one and another one over
there and none of them are worth anything... why? because the jobs disappeared
that they were getting those skins for... why'd they disappear? because of
greed and the desire to make more money so the jobs were moved offshore and
poof! there's goes another waste of time and money and the addition of yet
another poor unsuspecting schmuck to the debt wheel...
ummhummm... yep... that's what we really want to be doing to our citizens, eh?
