 LL> Hello Roy,

 >>LL> Shaquille O'Neal was born in Germany, of American parents,
 >>LL> both of whom are American citizens. Shaquille cannot be
 >>LL> elected president or vice president, even though he was
 >>LL> born an American citizen.

 >>BK> Yes, he can. The law does not say you have to be born in this
 >>BK> country, a native born citizen, it says you have to be a natural
 >>BK> born citizen.

 >>LL> Natural born citizen means being born on U.S. soil.
 >>LL> Germany is not U.S. soil.

 >>BK> No, natural born means a citizen by birth. Born on US soil is
 >>BK> native born.

 >>LL> Prior to 1776 everybody in what was to become the United States
 >>LL> (except Native Americans) were British subjects. Hence the term
 >>LL> "natural born Citizen" in the U.S. Consitution.

 >>RW> How about those residents of what was to become the state of Texas?
 >>RW> Or the states of Florida and Lousiana? Or Wisconsin and Illinois?

 >>LL> As the United States gained territory from foreign countries, such
 >>LL> as from England, Spain and France, citizenship was conferred on the
 >>LL> people who came with it. Even if they didn't like it or want it.

RW>> They could have gone home. Nice thing about the US, you're free to
RW>> come and go as you please.

LL> Not everybody. Especially not folks on life row.

But the point is that they were free to go, but lost that privelege when
they violated the law. (actually after they were convicted)

LL> At least, not until they are given the juice...

Probably a good thing. That makes more food available for the needy.

 >>LL> Michigan was acquired from the British in 1794.

RW>> Aquired, as in spoils of war per treaty.

LL> Not all territories were acquired "as in spoils of war per treaty."

However, Michigan was.

 >>LL> The Louisiana Purchase was acquired from France in 1803.

RW>> And it was just that, bought and paid for.

LL> The Louisiana Purchase did not include the city of New Orleans,
LL> which remained a Spanish possession. BTW, the two emissaries sent
LL> by President Jefferson were entrusted with buying the city of New
LL> Orleans from the French, and nothing else. But the French told
LL> the two Americans that France could not sell them the city of
LL> New Orleans because it was owned by Spain. However, France also
LL> said it was more than willing to sell all other French territories,
LL> which the Americans gladly accepted to do. Only problem was, the
LL> United States did not have any money to buy the land from the
LL> French. So President Jefferson made a deal with Lloyds of London,
LL> to borrow the money in order to make the Louisiana Purchase.
LL> Only problem was, a few years later, the United States defaulted
LL> on the loan. Which led to the War of 1812. Being that Andy
LL> Jackson (with a little bit of help from the pirate Jean Lafitte)
LL> bested the British in New Orleans, the United States decided to
LL> keep the land and screw the British (again).

Bovine Excrement.

 >>LL> Florida was acquired from the Spanish in 1819.

RW>> LOL! Check out the Sabine River area. More than Florida was aquired
 RW>> by the Adams-Onis treaty of 1819.

 LL> Which included Florida.

The Sabine river doesn't anywhere near Florida.

 >>LL> Former Mexican territories, such as Texas, was acquired in
 >>LL> 1848-1853.

RW>> Make that former Free State, Texas. True, it was once a Mexican
RW>> 'state' (not a territory), but Texas fought and won it's
RW>> independence from Mexico all by herself in 1836.

LL> With more than a bit of help from some Tennessee volunteers.

Regardless of who was involved, Texas was a Free State before they entered
the union of the United States.

 >>LL> Puerto Rico was acquired from Spain in 1898.

RW>> Aquired as in, kicked their ass out!

LL> From half a world away?

Sometimes the losing side will give the winner concessions, just so the
winner doesn't kick thier ass some more.

 >>LL> The U.S. Virgin Islands was acquired from Denmark in 1916.

RW>> Purchased for $25m in 1917. The inhabitants of the islands weren't
 RW>> given citizenship until 1927.

LL> The deal was made in 1916. The actual transaction of funds may have
 LL> been in 1917.

Semantics. The fact is that the inhabitants weren't given US citizenship
until ten years later.

 >>LL> From 1918-1920, Filipinos were granted U.S. citizenship under
 >>LL> a treaty with Spain, without giving Filipinos any say in the
 >>LL> matter.

RW>> I wouldn't be so sure about that if I were you. The US had already
RW>> aquired the Philippines from the Spanish in 1898. They (Philippinos)
RW>> were given their independance in 1935, but there was a 10 year
RW>> transition clause in that treaty, which was disrupted by the
RW>> Japanese in 1942. The Philippines didn't actually become independant
 RW>> until 1946.

LL> Filipinos were not automatically conferred citizenship in 1898.

They were never given US citizenship.

LL> And when it was (without their knowledge or consent), from
LL> 1918-1920, it was not a permanent deal.

Fact is, US citizenship for Flips was never in the cards.

 >>LL> And let's not forget about the people in Alaska and Hawaii who
 >>LL> had been Russian or Hawaiian citizens before the U.S. annexed
 >>LL> those areas of the world.

RW>> Those Ruskies who didn't want to be US citizens went home. Those who
RW>> wanted to be US citizens, stayed. Of course, the Eskimos didn't give
RW>> a shit one way or the other, as long as they didn't have to pay
 RW>> taxes.

LL> The Inuit and Polar Bears are the only groups of people/animals
LL> having the right to freely travel between the United States and
LL> Russia without the use of a passport.

The Inuit in Alaska, Canada and Greenland joined in 1977 in a statement of
common interest to form the Inuit Circumpolar Conference, a United Nations
NGO (nongovernment organization) which has no need for passports.

RW>> BTW, they're also elegible to run for the highest offices in the US.

LL> That would be interesting having the first elected Russian president
 LL> of the United States.

That would be impossible, as they would have had to be born in/on US
territory and be the offspring of at least one US citizen.

 >>LL> According to the U.S. Constitution, which is THE SUPREME LAW OF THE
 >>LL> LAND, if an individual was not born on U.S. soil, that individual
 >>LL> is ineligible to serve as president or vice president.

 RW>> Bullshit.

LL> Oh. I forgot. Wally World is the Supreme Law of the Land. My bad.

No, your bad is not knowing what you're talking about.

 >>LL> It really is that simple.

RW>> Sorry about your ignorance in the matter. It's really more
RW>> complicated than that. As you've been told over and over again.

LL> The world according to Roy. Or is that Wally World?

Wally World is located in Lousiana...close to the swamp where you live.

               R\%/itt
