In rural areas we still have the single box on a post out on the road at the
end
of the driveway.  For outgoing mail you put the little flag up and thr rural
carrier
picks up the mail.  In town, outgoing mail is either put into a slot in the
wall of
thje post office or placed in a locked box that's opened by a post office
carrier.

When I lived in Plattsmouth for many years I had a box on the house wall next
to
the door.  Several years ago the post office tried (mostly successfully) to get
everybody
in town to put a mailbox on a post out on the curb, so the carrier didn't have
to get
out of his truck to deliver the mail.  In some areas that has been replaced by
one box
on the corner of the block that serves a dozen or mour houses; the carrier
opens the
street side and delivers the mail, then locks it, customers access their
individual locked
boxes from the other side.

I can remember the day when the mail carrier *walked* his route of several city
blocks -
twice a day, carrying a big leather sack that held the mail.  Each neighborhood
had a big
green locked box that mail was delivered to twice a day; the carriers sorted
that mail into
their sacks and went off to walk their routes.
