LBJ did have a peace treaty on the table when Nixon took office.
However, Nixon chose to continue the war effort, thus costing more
lives.  And the eventual peace treaty that was signed was virtually
the same deal that LBJ had brokered.  So what was gained?

Gadhafi is not well-liked.  Not by us.  Not by most Libyans.  Unlike
you, I really AM informed enough about Libya to offer a supportable
position, having met a cabbie in New Orleans who is from Libya.  His
cousin was tortured by the present Libyan regime, which is why he did
not want to return (knowing what was in store for him).  However, due
to the extreme incompetence of the GWB regime, the cabbie was forced
to return to Libya (having been refused political asylum in this fine
country of ours).

I kid you not.  GWB normalized relations with Libya, and forced Libyans
who had applied for political asylum in this country to return to Libya.
I am most certain the cabbie is dead.  Along with all other Libyans who
were also forced to return "home".

Of course, none of that means we should invade Libya.  I do realize
that is what U.S. Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman want.  But
would that be wise?  GWB started two wars (Afghanistan and Iraq),
paid for those wars by raiding the social security trust fund, and
what have we got to show for it?  Thousands of dead American soldiers,
along with many more thousands wounded/maimed American soldiers.
Not to mention the number of broken families.

Barack Obama campaigned on the promise to get us out of Afghanistan.
We are still there.  Barack Obama campaigned on the promise to get us
out of Iraq.  We are still there.  Barack Obama campaigned on the
promise to close the detention center at Gitmo.  We are still there.
Barack Obama campaigned on the promise to hold real trials for
terrorists here in America - not on foreign soil or by military
tribunal.  We are still holding military tribunals...

It is time to stop the madness.  It is time to get our men and women
in uniform out of harms way. It is time to end our mad adventures around
the world and start building bridges to create peace and prosperity for
all.

Unite Nations resolution 1973 is call to "protect civilians" from harm
in Libya.  Should that protection be extended to "protect civilians" in
Syria?  In Bahrain?  In Yemen?  In Saudi Arabia?  Who is going to
enforce that resolution?  NATO doesn't seem much interested, except
if prodded by US President Barack Obama.  Maybe John McCain and Joe
Lieberman should volunteer.

Oh, yeah.  War as a video game.  GWB loved it.  Only he thought
he was playing with toy soldiers, not soldiers made of flesh and
blood.  With predator drones not even toy soldiers are needed.
Isn't that peachy?

How would you feel if Chinese soldiers were manning joysticks that
controlled Chinese predator drones flying over the skies of Florida?
How would you feel if the UN imposed a no-fly zone over the skies
of the USA so that we could do nothing to defend ourselves?

By doing what we are presently doing, we are becoming just as
anti-democratic as the despots we say we oppose.  But then, what
else is new?
