Ärende: Who Started WWII

Hello Bob,

Since you present a unique perspective in this forum,
I will address this question to you rather than to all -

Who, or what side, started World War II?

Was it the British who started WWII?
Was it the Americans who started WWII?
Was it the Germans who started WWII?

Each side would naturally view its own side as fighting a "defensive"
war, never blaming themselves as being the aggressor.  The British were
attacked by those evil Nazis, not the other way around.  The Americans
were attacked by that evil madman, Adolf Hitler, the saintly FDR
defending all Americans from whatever harm stood in their way.  And
lets not forget that most evil of characters, Ming the Merciless, that
yellow-skinned devil from the planet Mongo who tried to annihilate
all lifeforms on Earth (fortunately we were saved by Flash Gordon).

PART ONE - THE USA

The USA did not want to fight WWI, but was forced into the conflict
after it had started.  You see, Germans were sinking American ships,
and the American president did not like that.  So, in 1917, we had
to put an end to the war.  The war to end all wars was thus begun.
And also to make the world safe for democracy.  That part never ends.

We fought bravely.  We also spent lots of money.  Our intervention
decided the outcome, as well as the fate, of all Europe.  Or so we
thought.

You see, as soon as the shooting was over, our friends (Britain,
France, Italy and Japan) forgot all about the common cause, what
we were supposed to be all fighting for, and refused to base the
peace on our fine president's ideals.  Europeans did not want a
just peace.  Europeans did not want a League of Nations.  Europeans
wanted to annex territories.  You know, invade other lands.  Make
those lands their own.  They had so much fun doing it for centuries
before, so why stop now?  Anyway, we got so disgusted at them for
going back to their warlike ways so soon after bringing WWI to an
end that we just up and left.  Went back home.  Let Europeans be
Europeans.

That was our first mistake.

After we went back home, we tried to mind our own business, and
not get involved in their business.

That was our second mistake.

Europeans, who were saved by America, defaulted on their war debts
and refused to repay the loans we made to them in their time of need.
That is the fine thanks we got from Europeans for having saved them
from themselves.

As a result, we had to reduce to a minimum whatever American capital
we could have sent, thus prohibiting loans to defaulting foreigners.

That was our third mistake.

Naturally, all these actions were fully justified by those events.
I mean, what do you expect us to do?  Just give away everything we
have to whoever wants it whenever they want it?

Well, we all know what happened next.  Each European country became
a military dictatorship - and a new arms race was started, violence
broke out, and another great war was started.

Which meant we had to do the whole thing all over again.  We had to
save Europeans from themselves.  Just like we had done years before.

That was our fourth mistake.

Of course it is in our best interest to stay out of those stupid
and senseless internecine old-world catfights.  It is the supreme
duty of the American government to its people to maintain a strict
neutrality to warring nations across the sea.  But Uncle Sam likes
to fight!  And when those sissies in England refused to put up their
dukes (and earls, and kings, and queens, etc.), that appeasement
policy was just not going to sit very well with the American people.
I mean, boxing is our favorite sport!  Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano,
Muhammed Ali, George Foreman, and so many more greats!  Britain,
France, and Soviet Russia had nothing but wimps, choosing to go
down for the count without ever stepping foot in the ring!

The only Europeans who were not wimps were Germans.  They had
Max Snelling, who knew how to fight.  It's a good thing we had
Joe Louis on our side, else them Nazis would have taken over
the entire world (or at least the European continent).

German troops were everywhere, occupying the entire Atlantic
seacoast from Norway to Equatorial Africa.  The Japanese managed
to conquer the entire Chinese coastline, threatening to invade
the Philippine Islands.

Everybody in America knew the Nazis and Japanese were planning
to invade North and South America.  Better to fight them in Europe
and in the Pacific rather than here.  After all, we were the arsenal
of democracy, and Uncle Sam was our fighter (not just our boxer).

We produced weapons for the British and the Russians so they
could fight the Germans.  And then, do you know what happened?
The cowardly Japanese conduct a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor,
killing thousands of Americans in the early morning hours.
This Japanese action was totally unprovoked aggression taken
against a peace-loving people.  Together with Germany and Italy
this Axis of Evil had declared war on America.  A country that
had done nothing but try to help others around the world.

The events that transpired proved beyond a shadow of a doubt
that disarmament and disinterest cannot and will not protect
America from harm.

Therefore, peace in the world can only be maintained if the
USA maintains the biggest, baddest, and meanest army, the biggest,
baddest, and meanest navy, and the biggest, baddest, and meanest
air force, in the world.

We must secure military bases at all strategic points in the world -
not just in the Western Hemisphere but also in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Only by controlling everything can there be peace in the world.
Robert Heinlein knew that.  So should we all.
