Ärende: Information from Fidonews HQ

Here's an editorial that I had plans for publishing in this week's issue of the
Fidonews. But I scrapped it. When I became editor, almost ten years ago, I
promised myself that I would never, NEVER, use the Snooze to promote my
personal agenda. And I feel this editorial would violate that promise.

   But, nevertheless, I think that the information is vital to all our readers,
so I now post it here in the more volatile echo:

         *They are going national*

Well it wasn't exactly unexpected. Ever since I -- a Swede -- was
appointed editor in January 2002, a minority of people in zone 1 have
constantly tried to obstruct and reverse this appointment with all
means available to them.

Five years ago they started their own competing magazine, and we all
thought everything would calm down. Unfortunately it didn't. Once
again they went back to the FIDONEWS echo.

The last couple of months the aggression escalated to beyond what can
be regarded as decent. The personal insults in the FIDONEWS echo,
against anyone still believing that the Fidonews editor *can* be
someone from outside zone 1, went far beyond all imaginable limits.

Now they've started their own Fidonews. Their first, 5yo child
obviously wasn't enough, they also wanted The Real Thing.

Well, they could have started their own, national edition of Fidonews
with grace. I for one wouldn't object -- on the contrary, I would have
assisted the effort in any way I could. But unfortunately they just,
without prior notice, pulled the plug on everyone who was na‹ve enough
to believe that the major connection points in zone 1 would adhere to
net neutrality as per our policy.

It's also rather symptomatic that their new, national editor couldn't
even get my name right in his first editorial. And, no, I'm not
talking about my first name, that I know, and accept, can cause
problems for people with a 26 character limitation of their keyboards.
He didn't get my family name right...

Alors, if you want to continue to receive the international edition,
and was relying on a zone 1 hub for your FTN connection, you may want
to consider another connection. There are numerous of them around,
just send a netmail to e.g. 2:2/0 (ZC2), 2:2/2 (Fidonews HQ) or 2:2/20
(The FTSC Chairman) and you'll get instant help with both the echo and
the file echo.
