NB> Just strap on a tool belt and start screwing it all up! :)

I've seen one or two essential tradesmen who have walked into a job shop
and just picked up a work traveler and begin to do the job. When the boss
notices them, they have product in front of them that shows they can do
the work. Now all they have to negotiate is the wages.

NB> So they've stopped the apprenticeship? Are more and more T&D/Mold
 NB> making companies following suit?

I'm not so sure anymore. Micro had in-house designed switch products to
sell, it was just a question of economics whether or not to continue
training people to do it, or just offer for bid the tooling work to a
dedicated T&D company.

 >> There are T&D shops all over the midwest from Minnesota to Michigan
 >> and Ohio as far south as Memphis and Atlanta. All offering training.

NB> Training in the sense of a real apprenticeship by today's standards?

Today's trade standards I would say. T&D makers are still needed,
especially those that can do their own machining. I've seen so-called T&D
makers that have never machined anything in their lifetime. To me, they're
just assemblers of a machinists output.

NB> Or are they sending them to school and paying for it?

They've all been to school to learn the math and algabraic formulas to
work on tooling. How they get that today is up to the company doing the
training.

 >> 8^) I remembered that it's framed and mounted on the wall behind me

NB> That's a hell of a good place to put it. I might just do the same!

They used to hang on the wall in my office at my shop. They were needed to
prove to HR that I was what I said I was when applying for a job in the
past. I took them frame and all.

NB> It's surprising they're still around, to be honest.

I'm surprised too.

NB> So basically, that company will probably go under eventually.

They have a niche in the market that few companies can do. But, you may be
right if they don't do something about those people.

NB> Either that or it's owned by a billionaire that just doesn't care
NB> whether it makes money or not.

It was once owned by a billionaire who would rather take his antique cars
on tour and let someone else run the company. He sold out to another
company who has installed upper management that can't seem to get it right
and by allowing their employees to do this, never will get it right.
