RB> I have to grin (crookedly) when I read about gas prices in the USA
RB> and how high they are... $3.18 a gallon would amount to $0.84 or EUR
RB> 0.67 per liter pump price.

I think that crooked grin is more like a grimace...especially when
comparing our gas prices to those in Europe.

RB> I bought gas for my Mazda 323 station wagen on Monday and paid EUR
RB> 1.47 per liter for it. That was a low price, the lowest in town or
RB> even in the area. And for a full tank (mine was almost empty), I paid
RB> something over EUR 50 or $62.50. Not bad, eh? ;-(

I think $62.50 would almost fill the tank on my Silverado at 26 gallons,
if it was on the quarter tank mark. I bought 10 gallons yesterday for
$3.06 a gallon, which brought it up to 3/4 tank.

RB> Most of the difference is tax, of course. If an American government
RB> would try to tax gas the way it's taxed here, I figure there'd be an
 RB> armed revolution.

Many Americans are suffering now with overpriced fuel costs, having to pay
what you do would kill them and this economy.

RB> One of the differences is, of course, the long driving distances in
RB> the USA. They eat up gas much faster than the relatively short
RB> distances we drive in Germany - that's why the high gas prices aren't
RB> quite as unpopular here as they would be in the States (although
RB> athere are a few, like me, who hate to pay high gas taxes that are
RB> then put into the general budget rather than used to construct and
RB> repair roads). The long driving distances in the States make even a
RB> small price increase at the pump into a major financial problem.

All of my driving is around town these days. We haven't gone anywhere in a
while. Went to San Antonio for Thanksgiving with friends but that's only
39 miles one way. Nancy wanted to drive, so we took her car.

RB> In the end, it's not really the oil prices driving the gas price - at
RB> least that's not the major factor - it's governments that see a juicy
RB> opportunity to rake in extra money without causing too much public
RB> outrage in their direction - everyone instead damns the oil multis,
RB> which admittedly earn well, but are not the ones making the most
 RB> money out of gasoline.

I agree here...although the oil companys make billions of dollars, they
also invest as much into their holdings to produce that oil. After the BP
drilling rig fire, explosion and subsequent oil spill in the Gulf of
Mexico, off shore drilling was ceased by the US government. This caused
oil and in turn gasoline prices to surge. Not to mention many lost jobs in
the process. BP stocks dropped to half in value and a lot of investors
have lost money too. Me included.

RB> And I assume that's true in the States as well as in Germany,
RB> although the taxes on gas are lower.

We have federal and state taxes on gasoline. The federal tax is a steady
stationary price at 18cents/gallon, while state taxes flucuate from state
to state. State taxes are the reason Californians pay $4/gallon while we
here in Texas enjoy some of the lowest prices in the country.
