Dangerous not only if you are naive enough to provide your data, but the
website could be prepared to send you a virus/worm/trojan. Unfortunately, such
things are possible. Best never access an unknown website unless you're well
protected by antivirus software (and sometimes even that isn't enough).

It's quite possible that such messages don't even come from your friends, but
from malware that has infected their computer and uses their address book to
send spam or virus messages to everyone in it. If a message looks "funny", the
best thing is to check with your friend to see if they really sent it before
doing anything further.

Only problem about all that is: how do you define "spam" and how do you detect
the true source? It's not that easy to do, and when legitimate systems are
taken over by malware bots and start sending spam, the problem just gets
harder. The only real solution is continuous vigilence and paying attention to
your own system.

Any way, some of the spam I get is funny: the stuff from Nigeria is often
hilarious. I sometimes read it before I delete it.

Haven't gotten much of it lately, though - the newest trick appeaers to be
messages saying someone has listed you as a "friend" on Facebook and inviting a
reply. I've gotten three of those in the past couple of weeks, but naturally
just delete them. No idea what the "hook" is in this case, but there's bound to
be one.
