Ward,

>> See my reply to Roy.. interesting artifacts have been found on the atoll
>> where Earhart is thought to have landed..

> Actually, nothing is known at all, except that Earhart did not reach Howland.

The research isn't finished yet so of course there is still a lack of
information which can be definitely attributed to this flight and Earhart and
Noonans' demise.

> A finger phalanx bone was found but DNA-research is inconclusive, it may even
> be a turtle bone.

It may be.. Conclusion according TIGHAR: jury is still out on that one.

>Further some traces of rouge, a broken woman's cosmetic

> That is 'it'.

No, it's not. They also have recovered fecal matter shown to be from two
individuals at the "Seven site":

"Maine anthropologist Kristin Sobolik, Ph.D., who has extensive experience in
analyzing ancient fecal material. She concluded the mass had some fecal
properties and recommended that TIGHAR ask Dr. Lewis to further evaluate the
clumps using molecular genetic methods. The University of Oklahoma Molecular
Anthropology Laboratories were successful in detecting human mitochondrial DNA
in the material. Unlike the bone fragment, the presence of human DNA in the
clumps is unambiguous. DNA from two individuals was detected but, to date, the
amount extracted is not sufficient for comparison to reference samples. More
sophisticated testing is now under way in the hope of learning more."

Conclusion: Jury is still out.

>Had Earhart/Noonan really landed at Gardner they would've salvaged parts of th
> plane but that seems not to be the case.

No, they wouldn't have if the plane was washed off the reef by the tides into
the water... not to mention their lack of tools necessary to salvage. The
timing of the plane being washed off the reef by the tides also fits with
Earhart's transmissions stopping since the plane's radio couldn't be charged
once it was in water.

>Some aluminium parts have been found
> on Gardner but they cannot be possitively linked to an airplane.

You've seen the aluminium parts? I think not.

Also found is more than " a few heat-warped bottles":

"TIGHAR has long suspected artifact 2-8-S-2a was a 1930s bottle of hand lotion.
Now we think we know the name of the brand and product."

That product being in use by women of Earhart's time.

"In the depths of the Great Depression, [the] Campana [company] was selling
tens of millions of bottles annually of its leading product, Campana Italian
Balm."

"...[an] intact bottle of Campana Italian Balm and the artifact had residues
that are spectrally similar to Tragacanth Gum, a substance that appears in an
ingredient list for Campana Italian Balm. Also, the residues from the intact
Campana Italian Balm bottle and the new residues tested from the artifact
bottle appear to match well with one another."

I'm not going to quote all the research findings regarding the anti-freckle
cream jar.. it's on the TIGHAR site.

> Do not forget, Earhart/Noonan disappeared in 1937. From 1938 through 1965 the
>island was inhabited by British subjects, even a coconut plantation was tried.
> During those 27 years nobody of the up to 100 people living there found a
> trace.

Indeed, that is history.. The fact that a number of coconut farmers did no
research is not surprising. They were there to start a farm for coconuts, not
for research.

> Gardner is 6km by 2km wide but most of that is an atol, there's only a

If you are not an archaeologist, chances are you wouldn't find a thing...

> THIGAR (The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery), I think I've

You've missed quite a bit. I suggest you go back and re-read that research.

> Noonan was a
> known severe alcoholic, his reasons for being asked to leave PanAm are still
> unclear but I wouldn't be surprised if it were alcohol.

"film of Earhart and Noonan boarding the airplane that morning show a bright
and cheerful Fred Noonan helping Amelia up onto the wing. The stories about
Noonan's drinking seem to have begun in 1966 with the publication of The Search
for Amelia Earhart by Frederick Goerner and are totally without documentary
support."

You've no doubt see other documentation proving your statement?

> [Noonan was an alcoholic

Not proven, and not according to National archives. You however have no
problem believing one book which has no documentary support.

>and THIGAR is mainly about speculation]

"Jury is still out" on a number of TIGHAR's research projects and this summer
they are returning to Nikumaroro.

Take care,
Janis
