Let's consider the MODERATOR'S request and see where it leads us -

It should be obvious to all (as it has to Freejack) that we should
never expose ourselves to danger.  Especially in this present day and
age.  To do otherwise would be more than foolish.

At least that is the way I look at it.

I am sure Freejack would agree.

Do you trust me?  Should you trust me?  Hell, I am not sure I trust
myself.  As such, why should anyone trust me?

If you participate in fido, then you sure as hell better trust me.
You might ask yourself, "What can you do with my name?"  Well, here
are a few things I can do with your name -

I can look you up in the local phone book.  This task has been
made extremely easy given the internet.  Not only do I get to find
out your phone number, but I also get to find out your address.
That means I can call you, I can drop by your house and roll it
with toilet paper, or if I am a pyromaniac enjoy a very nice
bonfire.  Isn't that neat?  Even if you have an unlisted number
it makes no difference.  There are many different ways to find
out what that number is and where you live based on your name.

If you own property, which most folks do, or pay any utility bills,
which most folks do, your address is a matter of public record.

You got kids in public school?  Guess what?  It would be very easy
to find out not only your address, but also the address of your kids.
Now suppose I am a child molester, or some kind of pervert.  Feel
safer?  Do you still trust me?

Given a little bit of time I can learn all about you (and your
family).  Without ever speaking with you, or letting you know I
exist.

Who am I?  Does it matter?  After all, I could be anybody.  Or
nobody.  Especially if I never post.  I could be a policeman.
I could be an agent for the IRS.  I could even be CIA.  Of that
I will neither confirm nor deny.  Maybe I am a member of some
fanatical hate group, such as the Ku Klux Klan.  Or the Black
Panthers.  Or the Mafia.  Maybe even a former Nixon White House
staffer!

I could be that sweet teenager next door who likes to set houses
in the neighborhood on fire.  I could be that nice high school kid
who made plastic explosives at the school chemistry lab.

But hey.  You are an upstanding citizen amd have absolutely nothing
to hide from anybody.  And besides, you trust me.  So why not use
your real name on fido and the nets?  Trust me.  There really is
nothing to worry about.

Or is there?
