And the reports I read about muslims being attacked on the street, and the
appeals by politicians including G.W. Bush not to condemn muslims as a group
for 9/11 were media fabrications?

Not likely. You were just lucky enough to have lived in a peaceful area.

For that you'd need a time machine. The basic problem started in the late 1960s
and early 1970s.

Like the Germans frequently quip: We asked for workers and got families.

That worked out pretty well for most groups: nowadays you can hardly tell an
integrated Spaniard, Frenchman, Italian or Greek (to name several of the major
"guest worker" nationalities) from a native German except perhaps by the darker
complexion.

But in many cases, Turks who arrived as guest workers a couple of years after
the Greeks still can't speak German properly or even at all. That particularly
applies to the women, who - often intentionally - are isolated by their menfolk
and have little or no opportunity to learn the local language, making them
totally dependent on the men of the family. There is even a tendency among
young male Turks and ethnic Turks in Germany to look for a bride in Turkey,
since Turkish girls are considered less independent and easier to dominate than
German girls, in addition to being muslim, which is also still a major
consideration in marriages. It's a little like what would happen if Catholics
only married other Catholics and were ostracized from the family (and even
murdered in extreme cases) if they dared to marry (or even go out with) a
protestant.

You aren't a minority, at least not yet - Texas isn't southern Florida - but as
for the "peaceful" part... well, there are a lot of guns in Texas, as you've
mentioned and I can confirm from my own experience.
