TR> Untrue. Prior to WWII, America was quietly and peacefully `living its
TR> life'.

WD>For most of its history, America has 'always' been involved in some kind
WD>of a military conflict.

Europeans have little room to complain of America's history of warfare.

If you want to take `most of its history' as a criteria in a discussion of
this type, Germans have been making war for a thousand years or more. Not
`involved' in wars....MAKING wars. In fact, America had to put a stop to two
of them.

WD>Between the end of WW1 and the beginning of WW2 in the Pacific ... 27 to
WD>be exact.

WD>Over the years America was involved in hundreds of military conflicts,
WD>invasions, wars, you name it ... hundreds ... there is not a single other
WD>country that bears such "distinction".

The early Germans fought with the Romans, and have been involved in wars,
usually of their own making, for a lot more time than the USA has been a
nation. We dictated peace terms to Germany on one of them, and totally
destroyed Germany in another. In fact, I was stationed in Germany while in the
Army back in the mid-sixties, at a base not far from Kaiserslautern. Both wars
were forced on us BY Germany. After WWII, American troops occupied Germany for
decades. I had two assignments I was required to carry out while I was
`occupying' Germany.

In the first WW, it seems to me America got involved because German Uboats
were torpedoing American ships.

The second time, Japan sort of forced Germany into the war against America
because of the terms of the Tri-Partite Pact.

Of course, German Uboats were sinking American merchant ships already, so
little changed except America's more active role in the conflict on the
European side.

Personally, I wouldn't have gotten involved in European conflicts at all,
either WWI OR WWII. Let the Europeans fight their own battles.

But you can't alter history. The bottom line is, we saved England's ass, we
saved continental Europe's ass. We fought the Germans from Africa, Sicily,
Italy, through France, Belgium, Holland, all the way across the Rhine river.
If it weren't for America, most of western Europe would be speaking German and
Russian right now.

TR> When the Japs attacked Pearl Harbor, America came together and cranked up
TR> a war industry so fast the little bastards didn't even have time to get
TR> done bowing and scraping to each other in triumph over their sneak
TR> attack!

WD>The whole outcome of the war in the Pacific hinged on a single call of a
WD>Japanese officer in the Battle of Midway. I know the whole story about
WD>codebreaking and the water-supply hoax etc etc ... it was sheer luck and
WD>one faulty decision by Naguno.

You know...back when Hitler first brought up to a group of military leaders
and political leaders, his intent to invade the Soviet Union, I'm surprised
one of th higher ranking generals present at that meeting didn't draw his side
arm and shoot Hitler dead on the spot. That one didn't must be testimony as to
the amount of control the Nazis had over Germany by then. Not too long ago I
saw a map of what Europe looked like back then, with the areas conquered by
Germany just prior to `Barbarosa', which also included all of the Soviet
Union.

And a glance at a map of the US, and the South Pacific including Japan, should
have been enough to make the Japanese just as jittery. There was no way Japan
was gonna win a war against the US. Just as there was no way Germany was gonna
win against Russia. And once the US landed in Normandy (I have sand from two
of those landing areas), Germany was lost.

TR> Many of the designs and tools used to build war aircraft by Canada and
TR> Brittian were *American*. Not to mention the war material and supplies we
TR> `convoy'ed' there over the North Atlantic.

WD>The Lancaster is a British design, so was the Mosquito, the Beaufighter,
WD>the Handley Page Halifax, the Lysander, Tiger Moth ... all built in
WD>Canada.
WD>\%/@rd

Many of the engines and parts for aircraft that went into those planes came
from America at the beginning.
