Kennedy failed the operation as commander-in-chief, by getting cold feet at a
crucial moment in the operation, which caused it to collapse into a debacle!


It was a well-thought-out plan by a military leader (Eisenhower) who knew what
he was doing. He did, by the way, have some small experience in the area of
invasions from the sea (Operation Torch in North Africa...Operation Husky;
invasion of Sicily...then the invasion of the Italian Boot itself...Operation
Overlord; the invasion of France), so having been Supreme Allied Commander,
and now being Commander-In-Chief of all US forces (as well as being
president), naturally the plan would have worked out nicely had it been
followed closely.


However, a change of administration took place, and Kennedy wasn't up to the
task.


He failed to provide the necessary air power to help secure the beachhead that
was first established. Eisenhower understood the importance of full support of
the invading units once they were on the beach. Kennedy didn't. As a
Commander-In-Chief, Kennedy was a pretty good PT-boat commander (if you get my
drift) and failed the invading forces utterly.


Kennedy OWNS the failure...and also owns the terrible murders, tortures,
executions, hunger, base living conditions that have prevailed in Cuba since!

Not at all. Kruschev knew better. The Russian Navy was then not even capable
of standing up to the US Navy for an entire year. And Cuba was a long ways
from Moscow. Even then the Soviet Army had its hands full in the western
portions of Europe it occupied. The Allies still had the firepower AND the
forces to have driven the Russians out of Western Europe. The Soviets also
didn't as yet have the nuclear capability the US had back then. So that was
also a factor.

The plane I was on returning from Vietnam was all American Army troops. The
ranking officer on the plane was a Lt. Colonel who had served in one of the
main infantry units in-country (Big Red One, I think), and we were ready for
any problems with the hippie protesters at Oakland long before we ever got
near the North American west coast.. The military diverted the flight to
Spokane because of the number of hippie dopers at Oakland waiting for us.


Too bad. They'd have gotten a terrible surprise.
