The oil and gas companies tell everybody there will be lots of jobs
for everybody, and people from all over move in, businesses open,
houses are built, etc.  Then comes the bust.  And then another boom.
And another bust.  Until the oil and gas is completely dried up.

The oil and gas companies then pack their bags and leave, the area
reverting to its backwater days of being nothing more than swampland
fit only for alligators and nutria.

Today the oil and gas companies are exploring Baku and the Black
Sea region, making that part of the world like the Wild Wild West.

And then will come the bust, and a return to normalcy.

Cajuns know this because Cajuns lived it.
