Austerity has never worked.  Not for any country, at any time, in
history.  And yet politicians always raise its ugly head, claiming
austerity as being "the answer" for all the problems that exist in
the world.  Or at least in their own little country.

FDR was a fiscal conservative.  He understood what austerity was,
what it did, and how to counter the evils that it had brought.

The first FDR did when he became president was to declare a bank
holiday.  This bank holiday was actually a ten-day period in which
all of the banks in the USA were closed.  And then he cleaned house.
The bad banks were not permitted to re-open their doors.  That was
about one-third of all the banks in the USA.  The rest were placed
under much more stringent rules and regulations, which allowed the
economy to begin to rebound.

FDR knew the key to success was to spend money.  Lots of money.
The only way to get out of the economic depression the USA (and
the world) was in was to spend money.  Preferably other peoples
money.  How to do that was to put people to work.  Not as slaves,
but as hired employees, all paid with real dollars.  So FDR got
the Congress to go along, and set up several government programs
to do just that.  With jobs, people had money.  With money, people
could buy things.  And build things.  Such as buying land, and
building houses.  And driving cars.  Oh, how Americans love their
cars.  So much, that when Dwight Eisenhower took office, he got
the Congress to approve the Interstate system, so people could
drive non-stop from coast-to-coast in their fancy new cars ...

Reagan got us in a war in Grenada.  Not too bad, all things
considered.  He also traded arms for hostages (Iran/Contra).
Not too bad, all things considered.

Bush41 got us in a war in Iraq.  But at least he had a reason.
Bush41 also got us in a war in Panama.  On the excuse the leader
of Panama was a drug lord.  And had the Panamanian leader arrested
INSIDE A CHURCH!  Truly sacriligious, even for a Skull & Bones man.

Bush43 tanked the economy.  Almost the economy of the entire world.
Bush43 also got us in a war in Iraq.  But for no fucking reason.
Except perhaps that he wanted to?  If one can call that a reason?
