Hello Everybody,

There are no moderators in Fidonet.  And for good reason.  The
philosophy of Fidonet has always been to be open to all opinions,
from everyone, and from everywhere, regardless of geographic
location.  And that means no censorship.  No pre-screening of
messages before they are posted.  Participants are allowed to
freely post their own opinions without threats or interference.

Unfortunately, not all sysops believe freedom of expression should
be allowed to continue.  Instead, this small minority of sysops would
prefer to have the means to screen messages before they get posted.

Mark Lewis, a sysop who thinks he is a monkey, tried to explain
the benefits of censorship to a disbelieving Fidonet community -

yes, that's PROACTIVE moderating... fidonet employes REACTIVE
moderating... this is much the same as teacher smacking a student's
hand with a ruler for throwing paper in class... if the student keeps
acting up, they are given a vacation which may be standing in the
corner or even standing or sitting in the hall... if that doesn't
work, they may even be referred to others higher upstream which
could lead to them being removed from that class...

PROACTIVE moderating requires a change in the code of message
readers... that change requires access to netmail which may not
be made available to users... with no access to netmail, a user
cannot send their post to the moderator for approval or rejection...
the software coding change required would enforce the posts be sent
to the moderator... this would also require additional changes
elsewhere so that the moderator of an area can be determined as
well as the address to send the message to... the elist could be
used for this or even adding two new fields to the backbone.na
file(s)... the question is if it is worth it in this day in time
or if everyone simply wants to put FTN echos in the same class
as the usenet alt.* groups...

Do the sysops in Fidonet want to continue the fine tradition
of allowing all opinions to be freely expressed?  Or do the sysops
in Fidonet want to put an end to freedom of expression by denying
individuals that right?  Oh, those sysops would not be denying
themselves that right.  Only others they dislike from having that
right.  Do note the difference.
