Ärende: Modern English
======================
Brer Alexey Vissarionov wrote to Brer Roy Witt about Modern English:

AV>>>> The working language of this echoarea is English,
 MvdV>>> Yes.
RW>> He got that right, but the rest of it is pure bullshit.

AV> I'm not an expert in a bullshit, so I'll take your word...

I can tell when someone is trying to 'pull the wool' over someone elses
eyes.

MvdV>>> But that does not mean that only English names are allowed.
RW>> English spelling is required in text used to communicate, but an
RW>> exception is in order of spelling names

AV> English names != English spelling

I think so, with an emphasis on spelling names as best as one can under
the circumstances of western code pages that still use old diareal
letters and call them English characters.

AV> My name is Russian, but it's spelled using Latin characters according
AV> to the rules of English language. I can (and normally do) spell it
AV> using Cyrillic characters according to the rules of Russian (my
 AV> native) language: "€«¥ªá¥© é¨áá à¨®®¢".

I understand that and also know that the Cyrillic characters don't appear
as they would if they were written on a piece of paper.

MvdV>>> Of course we don't ask them to do that. Just as we do not ask you
MvdV>>> to change your name to "Alex".
RW>> Although Alex would be acceptable in English, as it represents a
RW>> shortened version of your first name.

AV> Yes, and it may be confused with "Alexander". Both names have Greek
AV> roots, but originally had different meaning.

I'm quite aware of that, but I used your name as an example of what one
can do, if they desire. There once was a very famous Siciean immigrant to
the US that called himself Al, but his real name was Alphonso Capone'
(English spelling). I had a partner in business whose parents immigrated
from Sicily also and they changed there last name from Fellioso to Fellis.
Not that they wanted to, but because that was what the immigration
authoritys did at the time and they had no awareness of it until it was
being used on a regular basis.

RW>> Sometimes it is very awkward to use complete first names and so we
RW>> shorten them for convenience in writing as well as speaking. Just as
RW>> it is unusual to find a person who spells his name such as Michiel,
RW>> when Michael is the English norm...and quite often Michael is
RW>> shortened to Mike for the convenience of writing and speaking it.

AV> IIRC, MvdV once told that he (being a hamradio amateur) introduced
AV> himself as "Mike" while making international QSOs - just to make his
AV> name sounding more familiar for other people.

Yes, he probably got that from the NATO "phonetic alphabet" which uses
"Mike" to indicate the letter "M" on phone radio contacts.

AV> However, that doesn't mean he was Mich_A_el at that time.

As I understand it, Michiel and Michael are not the same name.

RW>> An acute, grave or diaeresis may also be placed over an 'e' at the
RW>> end of a word to indicate that it is not silent, as in saké.

AV> Distinguishing usefulness and Japanese alcohol beverage worth that...
 AV> :-)

That depends on the subject matter. If you're speaking of the Sake'
beverage or tryinng to distinguish "sake" as in "for the sake of
arguement" from each other.
