==========================
Hi Maurice,

MK> I haven't really noticed that other then with a dialup
MK> line a BBS normally only has one user to deal with at
MK> any given moment, whereas with an internetted (or
MK> intranetwork) connection there could be more then one
MK> at any given moment which can cause problems especially
MK> in echoes where more then one user is entering a
MK> message at the same time. For that case, and simular
MK> cases, temp files seem to be the way to go.

I have been running a multi-line Maximus system under OS/2 since 1992, and it
ran perfect from day one. Part of that time I also had a telnet session
operating as well, 5 Lines of Maximus on the one machine, but I eventually
decided that telnet was not the way I wanted to go with Maximus. Now I am back
to just one line of Maximus, purely based on demand.......;-)

PK> process is managable, but with internet access... all bets are off.

MK> Not really since if they don't have access in the first place it
 MK> shouldn't matter.

The catch as I see it is validating people to give them write access. The old
approach does not lend itself to overseas internet access.....;-)

MK> It never used to be that way and
MK> now it seems that with these so-called enhancements the
MK> web is more insecure then it ever was, and all in the
MK> name of security. Very sad no?

Exactly. In an odd sort of way the web has brought about peoples desire for
annonimity and the expectance by the end user that they WILL remain annonymous
at all times......;-(

PK> From those visits, can you see an approach that could be applied to
PK> HTTP based access, that provides the management arm of BBS type
 PK> operation?

MK> I tried that once and failed. I think it could be done
MK> but would take more effort than it was worth to me.

EXACTLY my impressions too... to the letter. Possible but is it worth the
effort...

PK> to the same level. In many ways the internet world as we know it
PK> today is a haven for anarchists......;-)

MK> I sort of doubt that. Maybe anarchist wannabes. I
MK> think real anarchists probably have better things to do.

As there are a heap more wannabes that actuals, you can see how I was
thinking......;-)

MK> I think it is possible to encorporate graphics but so
MK> far I am not sure why. I can see audio streams being
MK> something that might be worthwhile potentially for
MK> blind users. Deaf people can usually read so they
MK> could easily fit in with things as is.

We had a local blind BBS user who made a name for himself around here. He used
screen scraping S/W for text to speech conversion, continually cursed Windows
and all graphical environments......;-). He ended up becoming a Radio
broadcaster and is quite well known (locally).

Cheers.............pk.
