The following is Ann Landers' response to an article sent to her by a
world traveler whose hobby is reading English-language newspapers:

 "Truth Often Stranger Than Fiction
 Dear Robert:
  That Reuter news story should lay to rest for all time
 the notion that I make up letters.  Nothing I might contrive
 could possible compare with what actually is happening around
 the world.  Thank you for sending on that `overview of
 humanity.'  Here is an abbreviated version:
  Let's raise a glass as we usher in the new year.   A
 great many interesting things occurred in 1993.  For example,
 there was a Brazilian who tried to kill his toothache with a
 bullet, and there was a stressed-out cop in Thailand who lost
 it and turned all the stoplights to `Go.'
  In Key Largo, a lusty but tiny Chihuahua and a rather
 large, love-struck Rottweiler `fell in love.'  The veterinarian
 declared it a hazardous pregnancy and performed a hysterectomy.
  In Guyana, several amazed police officers had to step in
 and curtail the activities of a monkey who had been breaking into
 homes, putting on lipstick and condoms and upsetting people with
 his rude gestures and lewd dancing.  No word about where he got
 the idea.
  In Harmony, Texas, an agriculture teacher was fired
 after he allowed a student to castrate a pig with his teeth.
 A New Zealand scofflaw bit a police dog's ear when he was being
 apprehended. In Ottawa, a man learned not to stick his nose into
 other people's business when a good portion of his was bitten
 off by an angry passenger when the man tried to stop a fight
 between the passenger and a taxi driver.   Doctors sewed it back
 on.
  Near Buenos Aires, a man died after eating an entire
 piglet.  His family said his eating habits of late had grown out
 of control.
  Then there was the elated South African who thought he
 had won a $330,000 prize in a fishing competition and was extremely
 disappointed when he learned the competition had ended three weeks
 earlier.
  Another one who should have checked in advance was the
 luckless fellow in Texas who was caught trying to sell a camping
 van while the body of the man he had allegedly killed was still
 in it.
  Then there was the judge whose doodles triggered an
 appeal from a Death Row inmate.  It seems the judge had drawn a
 happy face on the letter setting the date for the inmate's
 execution.
  The prize for the least observant must surely go to the
 wife of a Portuguese woman who was charged with fraud after
 spending 20 years pretending to be a male general in the
 army....uniform, chauffeur and all.  `I never suspected anything.'
 the hapless spouse told the court.
  And let us not forget Lorena, who indeed did `Bobbitt.'
  I ask you, dear readers, is truth stranger than fiction
 or what?"
