Ärende: ubuntu migrate
======================
On or about: 04-01-08 11:26, August Abolins did engage James Bradley
regarding, but not limited to: ubuntu migrate

AA> I'd like to install Ubuntu in its native file system. But I don't
 AA> want to dual-boot. I don't need to keep WinMe's FAT32 file system, but
AA> I'd like to be able to access (and use) my data and the old apps (for
AA> reference only) until I've copied and salvaged all the files I want to
AA> keep. Does this mean that I have to maintain a FAT32 partition as a
AA> shared partiation? I'm not sure what Ubuntu's "migrate" is designed to
 AA> do.

Let me assure you, I haven't the foggiest! I'm the new dummy, that shoved the
disks in, and followed directions.

Dual boot, means your C: drive can still run (more or less) like it used to.
Just creating partitions for Linux, and leaving C: otherwise alone, means you
can read and write to it from Linux. (NTFS included, with newer kernels.) Now,
you are limiting yourself, just because you don't want to dual boot? Most
installs - from what little I know - can automatically set up the loading
program with many OS partitions, so if you're worried about the workings,
relax.

Now, if you want to keep your data that is on your drive, AND run the programs
that are there, I can only speak to a dual boot. WINE or Linspire (I think...)
is what you might be interested in, to run Windows programs on Linux. Ubuntu
AFAIK is not geared that way, whatsoever.

Migrate: I can only presume by the name, in what it does.

AA> I can offload my old WinMe files to an external usb drive via a
AA> networked xp machine, no problem. But will Ubuntu recognize it if I
AA> connect that drive directly? (it would be NTFS) ...or will I be able
AA> to read/write to that drive on the network?

Chances are pretty good, your USB drive will be waiting for your attention when
you get there. Some rumble was going on, that NTFS support is *not* included in
the canned Ubuntu kernel however, and whether you'll be able to read it, or
just not write to it would be a great thing to research. Don't forget, Linux
out of the box will usually need coercion to run Windows programs at all, and
I've read about some concerted efforts to do it.

If you don't mind; why are you looking to Ubuntu/Linux? Can you maybe test the
water on a recommissioned machine, and try before you "buy"?

JB> You're talking about installing Linux to a WIN32 file system? (Or, if
JB> it's called FAT32???) Can you offload the data, and format the drive
JB> a Linux native fs first? USB drives are cheap, and even cheaper to
JB> borrow. How about burning a CD from ME first? (Don't forget to test

JB> If you are allergic to dual-boots, gparted (I think it's called) can
JB> abscond a few partitions from a defragmented Windows partition. From
JB> there, the install should see the original partition, but I've not
JB> seen much of Ubuntu, so that's as far as I can suggest.

... James

PS: You can also dual boot, and acquire the C: drive later. Remember, if you
partition the works, you also lose the works, right. Simply partitioning to a
Linux native scheme, and formatting it to anything will effectively wipe out
all file pointers.
