I understand what you're striving for but if life lengthening is the goal then
storing away the additional 1.5G of ram for when the current 512N decides to
pack it in might be a better idea.  Also you have to consider stashing away
spare cpu's, motherboards, etc.  My best guess is it probably isn't worth it
given the newer stuff is getting cheaper than the old stuff you're trying to
save.  Having said that, I unfortunetly can relate to your cause.  I still have
regrets about some of the stuff I retired, especially the P3's.  The only
trouble with those were all the crappy motherboards supporting those fine
cpu's. I could say EXACTLY the same about modern AMD's.  The cpu's are nice, it
is the garbage chipsets/motherboards supporting them that aren't worth the
material they're made of.  I honestly feel sorry for AMD.  Oh well.

Understood.  Apply my above comments to the above quote.  I liked P3's WAY
better than p4's but unfortunetly the motherboards required to support them
aren't doable.  Also brand new dual channel ram is cheaper and easier to come
by than ye ol' pc133, used or not.

The only shiney spot cpu-wise here is the X3220 and would buy another one. 
However three Atom 230's with motherboards are cheaper than just the X3220 so
there is that to consider.  Hm.  I wonder if a cluster of Atom's could keep up
or even surpass the Xeon.  I sort of doubt it but you never know for sure until
attempted.  :::evil grin:::  Maybe some day but I am not going to hold my
breath on that one.

I've heard that said much around these parts, even/especially from the MS

Very inexpensive comparitively speaking.  Heck even the new 330's are only a
few dollars more and definetly have better associated chips (onboard ethernet
for sure) than the 230's.  For what the Xeon with board, ram, etc. costs I
could probably put together ten Atom 330 systems! Talk about backups eh?

ttylinux is the right answer to the above.  An 8M ttylinux ramdisk is far more
attractive than 100's of megs of Debian!  No stinkin' Python either!!!  ;-)

For what it's worth, you and your wife definetly have all the moral support I
