Hello Maurice.

17 Nov 08 00:49, you wrote to me:

Well, generally boards, last here, quiet awhile, unless, the power grid goes
haywire, then they die suddenly ...

I don't have space to stash too much stuff, so usually, I build myself a
decent "solid" system, and donate the otherstuff to those who need it more
than myself ... , as far as regrets go, about the only systems I have regrets
about where a 486 DX 33 that died suddenly on me, and that board you gave me,
I liked that one particularly ... , but the power buggered it up ... :-((

The 486 was not working "properly", and I pressed the board, or was it the
memory, and it just went "ZAP" and it was gone ... :-(( , only the HDD
survived that one ...

AMD have gotten scarce around here off late ...

MK> Understood. Apply my above comments to the above quote. I liked P3's
MK> WAY better than p4's but unfortunetly the motherboards required to
MK> support them aren't doable. Also brand new dual channel ram is
MK> cheaper and easier to come by than ye ol' pc133, used or not.

Yeah, well, memory for that board is still currently available here, even if
it is 15 - 20 Rands a Gig. more expensive, than current memory ...

Also, as I am starting to feel that it is working reliably, I think I am going
to move the BBS over to it, and retire the current system, which locks up on
the odd occasion, a hardware problem I have yet to find ... , tho it will not
be "dedicated" to the BBS as the current box is ... , 128M RAM is enough, but
the 6Gig. HDD is also limiting the current BBS box ...

MK> The only shiney spot cpu-wise here is the X3220 and would buy another
MK> one. However three Atom 230's with motherboards are cheaper than just
MK> the X3220 so there is that to consider. Hm. I wonder if a cluster of
MK> Atom's could keep up or even surpass the Xeon. I sort of doubt it but
MK> you never know for sure until attempted. :::evil grin::: Maybe some
MK> day but I am not going to hold my breath on that one.

I really wouldn't mind myself ... <VVBG>

 >> My current favourite for browsing is FireFox

MK> I've heard that said much around these parts, even/especially from the
 MK> MS crowd.

Well, it makes life so much "easier" if you switch from Linux to MS-WINDOWS,
and the browser/e-mail client are identical ...

 >> Will see how that pans out

 MK> You are demonstrating wisdom.

Really .... <grin>

 >> If I had the money, I'd be very tempted to get one of those

MK> Very inexpensive comparitively speaking. Heck even the new 330's are
MK> only a few dollars more and definetly have better associated chips
MK> (onboard ethernet for sure) than the 230's. For what the Xeon with
MK> board, ram, etc. costs I could probably put together ten Atom 330
MK> systems! Talk about backups eh?

A mate of mine has a 2Gig. Asus EEE-PC and I am impressed, also suprised that
he bought a Linux box, but all he uses it for, is to transfer his photo's from
his camera's CF-Disk, to his external, USB drive, and from there to PhotoShop
on WINXP, after explaining a few things to him, he was up and away ... , he is
a very good amateur photographer ...

Could put the BBS on there, and use USB drives for the msgbase and file base,
and take up very little space here ... <grin> , and I most times ssh to the
BBS anyhow, so the little keyboard would not hamper me anyway ... <VBG>

MK> ttylinux is the right answer to the above. An 8M ttylinux ramdisk is
MK> far more attractive than 100's of megs of Debian! No stinkin' Python
 MK> either!!! ;-)

Well, I am going to try put the Debian "Business Card" install onto a 100M ZIP
Drive, and if it fits, then I can make it 60M - 80M easily, but that is still
more than ttylinux, but will be "quicker" to get off the ground ... <grin>,
once I get it working like I want, then it would be a short step to making my
own custom ttylinux, and building it on there ... , sort one step at a time
... <grin>

MK> For what it's worth, you and your wife definetly have all the moral
MK> support I am able to offer.

Many thanks, just come from visiting her, and if nothing untoward happens
tonight, she should come home tomorrow, but while I was there, her heartbeat
spiked twice from a reasonable 88-96 to a high of 135-138 ... , while it was
beating irregular ... , probably have to drink pills every day to control that
... <sigh>

The crowning glory to-day, is that the car's ignition started packing in ...
:-(((

You know anybody, I can send Murphy to visit, so he can leave me alone awhile
... <VVBG>

Russell
