A bigger issue at the moment is the format of the recorded original and it's
settings keeping in mind that it could be used to generate other formats that
are more limited as to the variables that will need to be reset.  Also keeping
in mind what formats other possibly desirable apps are able to deal with.  wav
appears to be the most compatible and can handle the widest range of the
variables.  Going directly to ogg within ecasound seems to produce the best
possible output as far as the higher compressed format are concerned but higher
resolution is possible with flac (with or without libsndfile) or wav.  Also wav
is the more compatible format when speaking of other available sound apps.

I only have two CD's.  I have tons of vinyl.  Never did buy into the CD craze.

Depends what the goal is methinks.  The so-called wasteful disk space might
prove to be a godsend in the future.  Near as I can tell, flac looks good and
seems to be well supported.  24-bit, 96000kHz is doable with either or.

Just started looking at jack and it might just fit in perfectly for the
record/monitoring scheme.  Have yet to actually take it for a test spin.

Ah!  Oh well.  Thank goodness for Linux eh?

Not really complicated but there are parts, such as the switch which fits at
the hidden side of where the arm meets the base of the unit and automagically
turns on/off the motor depending on the position of the arm. If that where to
pack it in I am not sure how I could replace it although bypassing it in favour
of a regular on/off switch might work out fine. Just an example but I think it
illustrates potential grief if any of the currently onboard stuff - delicate
wires etc. - should pack it in, especially considering all the time that has
passed by and that it was a clearance item when it was new.  Altering anything
could easily throw everything else out of whack ... which seems to be happening
in spite of my lack of interference other than some mild physical coaxing every
now and then.  I have yet to stumble across a suitable replacement. If I do
then I'd be far more willing to experiment with 'fixing' it.

Always have a backup.
