Understood.  I haven't sone a real slackware install since 7.0-ish. Then it was
only one CD, unless of course one wanted it all and then it required a second
CD for kde I believe.  Seeing that I seldom bothered with XFree - pre xorg daze
- kde never stood a chance.  If I am not mistaken I think it was around 4.0
when I started doing straight HD installs for myself and then rebuilt whatever
I thought needed rebuilding to suit my needs.  I discovered back then that HD
installs were superior and ended up being vastly more economical since no extra
seldom used devices were required.  Everyone and their dog needs a HD whereas
they only believe they require an optical drive.  Back then you could place
floppy drives into the mix of unneeded devices that people believed they
needed.

These days with usb and (e)sata hotswapping HD installs have gotten better and
vastly more usable and economical.  I am satisfied I made the correct choice
before all this became readily available as it saved much grief. However I did
make the mistake of buying a DVD burner despite the fact I should have known
better.  It now sits collecting dust.  Do you want it? I have no use for it and
it is barely used.

However not all CD's even boot on much of what I play with even if I put a
CD/DVD-rom on them without me replacing the stock kernel and often the initrd
and then re-isoize and reburn the whole shebang, or at least the bootable
CD/DVD.  Too much work and not worth the effort and additional expense.  HD
installs are the way to go given that the end result is the OS installed and
booted from an HD.  It makes much more sense to load an initrd onto a partition
that can be used to install a system to other drives and/or partitions on that
same drive.  Also this allows me to readily upgrade or even rebuild packages
and thus the packages can be far more dynamic than CD/DVD's can ever hope to
be. Despite the size limitaltions, even floppies are vastly superior to
CD/DVD's in this regard.

I don't regret having pursued a different stategy than most.  Seems to me that
Slackware's initrd still allows for HD installs.  That option remains the best
all things considered.  I could say the same for data.

Hm.  Is that still being maintained?  I replaced that need ages ago with
ttylinux, although even ttylinux I have to customize for my needs and wants. 
Even it is too mainstream in it's thinking.  I require much more flexibilty
than standard operating procedures allows for.

Slackware is still the best.  Definetly a great place to start despite all the
bloat.  I cannot say the same for the rest.
