Ärende: slipping into darkness
==============================
-> > Slack 12.2 install runs to three CDs.
->
-> Understood.  I haven't sone a real slackware install since 7.0-ish. Then
it was
-> only one CD, unless of course one wanted it all and then it required a
second
-> CD for kde I believe. Seeing that I seldom bothered with XFree - pre
xorg daze

There was a "Basic Linux" site at one time that offered a bare bones
Slack 8.1 install.

I tried to run with it but didn't know enough at that time.

-> - kde never stood a chance. If I am not mistaken I think it was around
4.0
-> when I started doing straight HD installs for myself and then rebuilt
whatever
-> I thought needed rebuilding to suit my needs. I discovered back then
that HD
-> installs were superior and ended up being vastly more economical since
no extra
-> seldom used devices were required. Everyone and their dog needs a HD
whereas

I _may_ get to that point one day.
I suffered some turmoil the last two years and it's really
put a drag on my intense interest in learning Linux.
I suspect it will return, my interest, as due to my circumstances
what the heck else is there to do?

Pondering a newer used box at 3.2 GHz for$120 U.S.
Also considering upgrading this monster once I found a
250 watt PS on ebay to fit thus supporting a GeForce 5200 PCI slot
video card.

The onboard card here is too lame and it causes the CPU
to really work beyond capacity.
MPlayer is unworkable for now.

-> they only believe they require an optical drive. Back then you could
place
-> floppy drives into the mix of unneeded devices that people believed they
-> needed.

If I buy the newer used box it comes with a gig of memory, 3.2 GHz HT
Pentium, 40 Gig HD, DVD player and CD-ROM RW.

At 120 U.S. what's to complain about?

-> These days with usb and (e)sata hotswapping HD installs have gotten
better and
-> vastly more usable and economical. I am satisfied I made the correct
choice
-> before all this became readily available as it saved much grief. However
I did
-> make the mistake of buying a DVD burner despite the fact I should have
known
-> better. It now sits collecting dust. Do you want it? I have no use for
it and
-> it is barely used.

Scarcely worth your shipping costs as I explain what I can get above.
But thanks for the offer.
Anyway, currently this machine really wouldn't support it.
Count on that, even with Linux.

-> > I just loaded the series A Linux basics off of install disk 1 and
-> > it gave me the option of forgoing formatting and reinstalling LiLo.
->
-> However not all CD's even boot on much of what I play with even if I put
a
-> CD/DVD-rom on them without me replacing the stock kernel and often the
initrd
-> and then re-isoize and reburn the whole shebang, or at least the
bootable
-> CD/DVD. Too much work and not worth the effort and additional expense.
HD
-> installs are the way to go given that the end result is the OS installed
and
-> booted from an HD. It makes much more sense to load an initrd onto a
partition
-> that can be used to install a system to other drives and/or partitions
on that
-> same drive. Also this allows me to readily upgrade or even rebuild
packages
-> and thus the packages can be far more dynamic than CD/DVD's can ever
hope to

Hmm, hadn't thought of that.
The initrd is the image file that sortsd out the hardware right?
I was just getting to that stuff two years ago.

-> be. Despite the size limitaltions, even floppies are vastly superior to
-> CD/DVD's in this regard.

-> I don't regret having pursued a different stategy than most. Seems to
me that
-> Slackware's initrd still allows for HD installs. That option remains
the best
-> all things considered. I could say the same for data.
->
-> > without Tom's root boot
->
-> Hm. Is that still being maintained? I replaced that need ages ago with
-> ttylinux, although even ttylinux I have to customize for my needs and
wants.
-> Even it is too mainstream in it's thinking. I require much more
flexibilty
-> than standard operating procedures allows for.
->
-> Slackware is still the best. Definetly a great place to start despite
all the
-> bloat. I cannot say the same for the rest.

My only other interest is burning a Knoppix ISO because it supposedly has
all the diagnostics and drivers to run most all systems.

The choices are limitless with Linux.
So right now my big decision is to go $60 to max out this antique
or $120 to buy something really strong for hardware.
It's looking like the latter.

There are a couple of other Linux releases I want to look at though.

BTW, you asked if my local dealer had Matrox cards.
Well per his web site not in stock but likely at his warehouse.
www.raccomputers.com if I recall correctly.

He's just around the corner from me and is a Linux geek.
Says he makes much more servicing Windows boxes, because they foul up
so much but would really prefer to only work on Linux.

He's put out his own version of Linux which has transformeed
a lot of previous WinBlows users to Linux.

I'll look for you at Minimal Linux and give you my email address,
only two people have it as yet.
