When I was last in the nodelist I did the same except with msged instead of
golded.  It all worked excellent from the perspective of Fido compatibilty. 
The real problem was connectivity.  My networks had serious issues with binkd
and simular.  Those strategies are better for user type apps as opposed to more
server daemons I discovered.  Using ftpd or sshd would have been more suitable
from a 24/7 networking perspective.

Now that I am a user a suitable offlining client would be nice but am not
unhappy with the way I am currently handling it.  Definetly not user friendly
but I don't seem to mind.

Not surprising to me.  I replaced what I used to do with telnet(d) with ssh(d)
years ago and find it to be much better.  In fact I am seriously considering
using scp to replace ftp(d) but haven't actually done that since I still prefer
ftp(d) for most of what I actually do on a day to day basis.  However,
telnet(d) got lost along the way which means that there is no longer any use or
need for (x)inetd which is nice.

Highly unlikely.  I don't see this being an issue though since they have
nothing I want/need and I have nothing that they want/need.  For my
wants/needs, gcc and friends, and the linux kernel source is the main concerns.
 Everything else is derived from having gcc and the kernel in sync and at the
moment that includes glibc but I have toyed with other c libs.  So far glibc
wins all things considered.  Unfortunetly that also means perl and in that
regard I have managed to minimalize that dependency as much as I can.  For the
targetted ttylinuxie systems perl isn't required but definetly bash, glibc and
busybox are part and parcel of it's foundation and there is absolutely nothing
there for those with no inclination to learning.  I make no apologies for that
fact.

Why wouldn't they just stick with Windows?  Isn't that familiar enough?
