Ärende: firewalls
=================
on 07-24-09 17:28: WAYNE CHIRNSIDE to JAMES BRADLEY re: Re: firewalls

WC> I thought about BSD but got hooked on Linux, no regrets.

I've been a little dismayed with the "Plug and go" versions of Linux. My
trouble is, only those seem to hit and miss the piles of oddball HW I throw at
it, and the months of kernel hacking to hit and miss with "regular"
distributions can be humbling. I still depend on community connections to
I-net, and for me to download and sneaker-net their completed
kernels/tarball-substitutes into the pigs is too often a too convoluted chore.
Slack it is, (At least it allows one to tweak!) but I'd drop that too in
seconds if a better mouse trap came along.

JB> I've read a big-wig to OpenBSD lives here, so I hope to fire off some

WC> All kinds of tutorials and user help groups, lessons for Linux.

OpenBSD claims to be adamant about documentation. Maybe, too adamant. <G>

WC> I had been doing REAL well after the stroke being HIGHLY motivated
WC> and was really cruising along.

"Bada-Bing!"
WC> An unfortunate, a ridiculous situation came up that put that to rest
 WC> for two years :-(

"Bada-Boom." )-|
 WC> I'm just going with a $100 - 120 upgrade in a used systems.
WC> Large tower, Intel chipsets thus Linux friendly.
WC> One advertized today for $79 dollars plus 24 shipping.
WC> Gig of memory, 80 Gig HD, CD-ROM RW and DVD player combo.
 WC> 3GHz Intel HT

That's about auction prices in CND$. I watched a Pentium D (Duo?) go for $150 +
10%. P4s w/o HDs usually fetch close to $50. Mind you, I did watch two HP
1.8gHz 4-CPU-SMP (Must have been P4s in 'em.) SCSI rackmounts go for $150 +
10%. They both had a few HDs in them, but by todays standards, not a lot of
real-estate to them.

WC> Next project, slightly off topic is a homemade HDTV antenna I'll
WC> build for the PC tuner card I'll be installing in the next box.

WC> So simple I'l describe it.
 WC> 3 dollar balanced 300 ohm - 75 ohn balun transformer.
WC> 6 wire coat hangers, 12 washers and wood screws and a 32 inch long 1x3.

I read into it, that it was a converter. Maybe with all the hype about using
old TVs to accept digital transmissions; I shouldn't be surprised with my speed
reading through the point. But; you say your vid capture card is ready for
digital reception? "Check out Mr. Fancy Pants." B-]

Update: I just watched a few U-Tube clips about assembling home-baked di-poles.
The music was better than the math to each. (More so, images to the guy
learning how to use a screwdriver.) I still like the story to a character that
needed a satellite phone to work in a college dorm. To keep his antenna
inconspicuous, he started bending the element to approximate a fractal
equation. Now, cell phones are printing fractal images into a printed circuit
to replace their external antennas.

WC> Coat hangers are cut to be 14" long and bent to a V 3" wide at the open
WC> end. Attached to the 1x3 2" apart, 1/2 inch in from either side 6 3/4
 WC> inches apart vertically.
WC> The two symmetrical inside V's pointing horizontal are wired together
WC> with the balun transformer connected equidistant between the two.
WC> The top and bottom symmetrical V elements are connected by crossover
WC> from one side to the other.

I was with you until "connected by crossover..." For structure? I would imagine
using thinner wire for the elements could increase your signal, but that would
require their own structures, introducing its own complications. Using
aluminium rod would be my next notion to avoid rust.

Update: Those "crossovers" are electrical connections to six or so elements I
saw in one of the vids, I take it?

JB> Like that many shots of tequila, it's to be expected to
 JB> lose count? <chuckle>

WC> Completely recovered from the stroke in 06, about 10 months ago.

WC> Oh well, it was a good day today, made some headway.

I just typed elsewhere, "Progress beats a setback every day of the week." Good
to hear!

WC> Next week off to Home Depot and perhaps Radio Shack for the minimal
WC> needed hardware for the antenna.

As an old friend used to say, "Here's to looking up your old address." <G>

So yannnnnnnked!
