Dunno that my eys are good enough for across  the room, but it sure beats the 
heck out of watching movies on a GSM cellphone or even a Sony PSP ... , and 
the sound card, is better than most current overings, maybe as a result, of it 
being stereo only, and not 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 ... 10.1 whatever the current 
overings are ...

Well with you "less needy" always wins, here, I am a bit more pragmatic ...

64 million dollar question is, is mplayer capable of "bit-perfect" sound 
reproduction ... , i.e. it does not apply any, up sampling/down 
sampling/oversampling/replay gain ... etc. to the audio it reproduces in any 
manner or form ... , such as Audacious is proven capable of ... ? <BG>

You are fortunate, not having distant family members who only use SKYPE for 
communication ... , simply because it is what they have and know ... <sigh>
