Ärende: well my heart went boom when I crossed that room
========================================================
Hey Benny!

> eee pc 2G surf
> 512M ram, 2048M harddisk

I think that is identical to the neighbour's which he leaves at my home. I
haven't done anything with it until yesterday uprading the kernel to 2.6.31.13.
Works great with inteldrmfb - one penguin on bootup - but still having some
issues with a few usb devices. Also alsa wrt oss compatibilty.

> why my eec is hot even when its idle ?

What does it show for cpu speed?

> ubuntu netbook edition ?

Nope. Either a slightly modified ttylinux (i486) or a pared down 2thingsInk
for x86_64. Of the two ttylinux is more compact but the 2thingsInk is vastly
more powerful. I even have a multimedia one for eeepc's but it wants 128M of
ramspace. Now that I have tested a 2.6.31.13 kernel I might try that for
targetting eeepc's. Even though it is AV capable it is still commandline
driven which scares off most of the eeepc crowd.

> a monster like xp with 8 browsers and constantly updates :/

You'd know better than I. Absolutely no MS products allowed in my home. My
neighbour has some of that and it is as close as it gets to my home.
:-)

> 512M is huge when one dont waste a ram disk on it :)

Most I use on there is 128M and that is only to test AV apps. This way I don't
need to use the installed system on the ssd unless we're looking to upgrade
something like we did with the kernel which was built on the Xeon and
transferred into the eeepc via ftp. I was amazed when it actually booted as I
no longer have a 32 bit cross compiler on the Xeon. Things are really starting
to take shape. Also I built a new system for the Atom that is roughly half way
between what is running on the Xeon and the eeepc version wise just to see if I
could get away upgrading a few things without breaking the AV stuff on the
Atom. It now works graphically speaking as well as audio-wise. However
MakeWorld.sh now takes just under 5 hours on the Atom but given the extra
functionality it was worth the effort. Now the sucker can take care of itself
which frees up the Xeon for some serious fun.

> i can easely follow you here, just not with 4G ram, damm :)

2G works but not for a toolchain build. I figure it is shy about 500M tops for
that. Close but no cigar. Running the toolchain in tmpfs is doable though but
not when actually building it unless it is made even more painful and slower
than it already is.

> but there would be out of diskspace very fast

Right. 4G is the right answer.

> and i belive i choice linux for that anyway

For sure.

> my own goal for the eee is to have a computer to update
> software on my nokia e51,

Bluetooth? If so then pppd and ftpd is the way to go. Awhile back I played
around with a bluetooth adapter and managed to provide a ppp login on the main
server for that. Seems to me that many handhelds have an ftp client they could
use to the server to facillitate upgrades for them. A piped wget would be the
ideal methinks. Lean and mean.

> ah nice, so testing on a vm like my eee could be done before
> burning the usb stick ? :)

That could work. Also building the system for the usb stick now that is more
or less in sync with the eeepc albiet with some upgrades to libs and apps such
as alsa, mplayer and the such. Now am using gcc-4.4.4 with glibc-2.11.2 and
all seems solid. Haven't targetted 32 bit yet which is what the eeepc needs.

> well i have to check bios on this fidonet computer, i might
> be back :=)

Come back anyhow.

Stinkin' bios. ;-)

Life is good,
Maurice
