Ärende: Ubuntu and VBox
=======================
PQ>Hi! Ed,
Hi Paul,

PQ>In a message to All you wrote:

PQ> EV> I tried using VBox today. And failed.

PQ>There are no failures, Ed. Just learning experiences. Now, you did this on
PQ>your Windows machine? Using the latest VirtualBox for Windows? ...

No Sir, I used the Innotek 1.4 version with my XP computer.

PQ> EV> I failed everytime, so I deleted all of the VMs.

PQ>Something didn't work as expected. There are no failures, Ed. You have to
PQ>approach the PC, confident in the knowledge that "you are the boss and you
wi
PQ>get your way in the end". "You are a winner"!

Paul, You are talking to a guy that took three days after buying a
Commodore 64 and Floppy drive and two blank SSSD floppy disks, to get one
of those disks formatted so I could start saving programs I typed in.

It's been a long hard road uphill every BIT of the way for me.

PQ> EV> I supposed giving them 512MB RAM and 4GB hard drive space would be
PQ> EV> enough but i know that I don't know what I'm doing.

PQ>Yes, that's fine for a U'u test VM. BTW, you can dangle that config at U'u
PQ>like a carrot on a stick, but you don't have to actually let it have its way
PQ>with the stuff. You only lose the stuff if you ever decide to install the
PQ>thing in the VM.

I will try it again then, but this time I won't Delete the VM.

PQ> EV> U'u 10.04 LTS Live CD just shows the U'u symbol at the bottom of the
PQ> EV> screen for a few seconds and then everything goes dark.

PQ>Mmm... not a good sign. I've seen things like that here too. And not just
PQ>with U'u; other disributions are just as bad. Don't fret about it.

Yep, I know computers always win because they have inside information!

PQ> EV> The U'u 7.04 Live CD starts up just fine and I played with it a bit
PQ> EV> today. I was surprised 7.04 didn't work for me in VBox.

PQ>Way too old for the hardware presented by vBox... probably (five years PC
PQ>evolution since that vBox version).

U'u 7.04 is mentioned in the v1.4 vBox manual I read.

PQ> EV> While using 7.04 I tried the various commands in Terminal that were
PQ> EV> suggested to me recently, all but two worked fine, the others needed
PQ> EV> additional packages but I didn't attempt installing them since I was
PQ> EV> using a Live CD.

PQ>I'm surprised that it worked for you outside of vBox.

7.04 has always worked for me when I booted it up on this XP box.

PQ> EV> I learned that U'u doesn't like the ESC key being used to back out of
PQ> EV> a help or info screen.

PQ>Not important. (Any paging in a terminal prompt is based on the 'more'
filte
PQ>[just like MS-DOS's "more"], or more likely, it's based on the 'less' filter
PQ>which is a little more friendly with the ability to go backwards and
forwards
PQ>through a displayed text using the [PageUP]&[PageDown] keys. Hit 'q' to
quit
PQ>either of them.)

I didn't think of using the PageUP/PageDOWN keys, thanks!, I'll try it.

PQ> EV> d to go back to the start, and q to quit is what I learned to use,
PQ> EV> instead of just panicing and closing a Terminal window.

PQ>Yes. (I didn't know about 'd' but it ain't important.)

Hey!, I told You something that You didn't know, Hooray!

PQ> EV> I started out using the free command and then I wanted to see if I
PQ> EV> could figure out how to Redirect the Standard Output to a file.
PQ> EV> About an hour or so later after reading a lot, I learned cp should be
PQ> EV> the command to use, but I was tired of too much learning and shut
PQ> EV> down.
PQ> EV> When I try 7.04 again how would I Redirect the output of free to a
PQ> EV> directory on the XP hard drive.
PQ> EV> Would it be something like I would do at a XP CMD prompt such as:

PQ> free >> HP_PAVILION/directory/sub-directory/filename

PQ> EV> HP_Pavilion is the name of the hard disk Volume.

PQ>At this point you are running the live CD on your machine with -NO- vBox in
PQ>use?!? Yes? Yep, so long as the volume is "mounted" in U'u, that will do
it
PQ>for you however just use a single redirection symbol and get used to putting
PQ>the symbol right up close to the redirection path just like Doug suggested
(s
PQ>that a redirected target doesn't end up with a [Space] char as part of the
PQ>pathname).

Correct, I booted U'u 7.04 Live CD when I restarted the XP computer.

I suppose the volume is mounted, the volumns name showed up last time.

I used the double > marks just in case there was a file on my drive with
the same name already and I wouldn't lose that file, I would just append
what I was trying to do to the exsisting file.

I try to be very careful.

PQ> EV> Also today I found a list of bash commands that I printed out in
PQ> EV> 2008.
PQ> EV> I also saw a listing of bash commands after typing something like
PQ> EV> bash --help I would like to print that on my printer or save to a
PQ> EV> file but after trying for a while I gave up.

PQ>Just save it as a file first, like the 'free' redirection. Redirect the
'bas
PQ>help to a file and print it later in Windows.

PQ>NB. I'm not giving you permission to blow away another forest in order to
PQ>print these things. I learned my lesson on this back in 1990-something when
PQ>printed the Telix for DOS 3.15 manual. A week later version 3.20 was
release
PQ> In the end what I had was a bundle of dead trees in my hand that was
useless
PQ>for anything other than as scrap paper for my two little girls to draw
PQ>squiggley pictures on. Since then I've preferred to have documentation
PQ>on-screen (as either text files or PDF files), right up beside where I'm
PQ>working on the PC. But, that's just me.

I have made just a few print outs for learning Linux/U'u, less than 15
pages were used so I don't think any forest is in danger.

I like reading on the monitor, so I save but usually don't print out all
the stuff I find interesting.

I just looked at the used space on the hard drive and it is 93 billion
bytes now, that's up from 60 billion bytes used before I tried making
those 3 VMs.

The hard drive has 147 billion bytes free so I have room to play around
with vBox 1.4 .

PQ> EV> I will try again. Maybe I'll try VBox with U'u 12.04 LTS if I find
PQ> EV> the ROUNDTUIT to download the .iso file.

PQ>Yes, yes. This is good, Ed. Never let the machine win.

Wat Ya Say?
