Oops, I started a reply and then realised I was concentrating on the
Windows/DOS vBox.  I'm contemplating a netmail thing instead.  That may not
suit you?  Perhaps email: eskimo261@bigfoot.com?

For my Linux vBoxes, from day-1 I made sure that everything was placed/running
from under the "/opt/ftn/fido/" directory, and, the backups are much more
simple after having done that.  Everything, everything, Fido in a Linux vBox is
under that root dir.  It's been the best thing I ever did, and I've been
patting myself on the shoulder for it ever since.  :)

It will be easier if I refer to piccies there.  The best one outlining my
typical Linux vBox is the pic on page two, "VirtualBox Puppy 4.12
TuxCommander.png", which shows my Ubuntu deskptop with a vBox-ed TuxCommander
view of the Fido directory structure on the right file panel (and a few bits on
the left as well).  It used to work in Xubuntu 11.10 but I've gone over to
using Puppy, 'coz it's small (90-something megs) and it works; no ifs, buts, or
maybes, or, permissions hassles.

I just use the system scheduler (generically called 'cron' on a Linux system)
to run a daily backup (script).  It uses another generic system util called
'tar' to do the backup, like so:

  tar -cvf /var/tmp/quinnspost-"$DATE"-"$UNIQ_SERNUM".tar /opt/ftn/fido/*

(Should be one line.)(The date & serial number references are variables
configured earlier in the script.)

Once the doo-hickey.tar file is created, it's just a matter of moving it to the
binkD (Stargate) filebox for my main Dell, like so:

  mv -f -t /opt/ftn/fido/fileboxes/pauls
/var/tmp/quinnspost-"$DATE"-"$UNIQ_SERNUM".tar

(Should be one line.)  And, whoosh!  Seconds later, it's sent off to my desktop
PC.  I keep a week's worth of such daily backups, for two vBoxes.

Ah, checkout "dangerousOZ.jpg" on page 3 of my pics.  Look for the "g" in
'Maneating Koalas', on the east coast between 'Poisonous snakes' &
'Mosquitoes'.  Right where that "g" is.  (The upright chunk of land should
really be an island.  The largest sand island on Earth: Fraser Island.)  We're
about 260 kliks (~160 miles) north of Brisbane... about 80 miles from Steve
Irwin's joint, between here and Brisbane.

Swell.  I did the same, about 40 years ago.  The only nice bits about Sydney
are the Bay/Harbour and the nifty highways leaving town.  :)
