Ärende: linux dialup

I've been unable to get a login from KNOPPIX using any of it's
existing dialers.  KPPP, wvdial, and pppconfig/pon all fail to
login to my ISP.

I was surprised to find that KNOPPIX can detect and use my
winmodem from within M$ Virtual PC software. When KNOPPIX is
booted without the Virtual PC software it doesn't 'see' the
modem at all. :-( 

I've had similar disappointments with a SlackWare based mini
install of linux. The 'author' of the install package made
disparaging remarks about my ability to use/understand the
software in a public forum but sent private email that he had
never tested the dialup because he didn't have dialup access
where he lived (and was too stupid to ask a friend to test it
for him). Most of the people I talked to about the problem gave
me the old "Works for me!" response until a professional UNIX
programmer on usenet suggested that I rip out what was there
and replace it with 'standard' PPP software. I did that and
finally got the install online. 

Unfortunately those installs (3 of them) are on a machine that
is 140 miles away and I failed to burn copies of those installs
to CDs (I thought I had but apparently not as I can't find
them). 

When using Google to search for some clues I find that there
are thousands of people unable to connect using dialup and not
just KNOPPIX. I'm seeing messages that the 2.6 kernel has
'problems' with pppd and at the website for KPPP they admit
that they rushed it out the door too soon and IT has problems
as well. 

Strange as it might seem ALL versions of Windows will connect
with no special 'tweaking'? Even DOS will connect with _some_
manual editing of config files. 

I _am_ aware of MSCHAP and MSCHAPv2 but I would expect those
who write/rewrite linux modules to _also_ be aware and TEST THE
DAMN DIALUP or leave it off the CD? 

I had similar problems with OBERON and those people had a 'who
gives a shit' attitude (all but one). I had to rewrite the
OBERON version of PPPD to get it to work and that was in a
computer language few have ever even seen source code for -
OBERON. It worked and it was cute etc. but I am getting old and
tired and really don't understand why people claim to have
finished their 'projects' when important parts haven't even
been tested? 

Oh well, that's my rant and now I know why the general public
hasn't welcomed linux with open arms (nor OBERON for that
matter).
