I almost bought a flash disk friday however the deal was a rebate thing.
The external USB hard drive case I did buy as it was discounted.
I/O Magic with the cable included.

Ya got me.
Lots more stuff there for sure however it lacked iptables as it was Slack 10.2
which is a huge drawback to my firewall strategy.
Older Kernel as well.
Perhaps Debian has advanced since last you looked at it?

Near about up to it again now I think.
At any rate with care I believe I can safely manage it.
One thing I had noted about Slack 10.2 is it had a GUI bootloader construction
tool
with a diagnostic before you commit.
Oh, well, once more by the manual method.

 Well my goal was a test of both the CPU load and monitor resolution
 as I didn't know for certain it would support 1280x1024

 Looked up the specs fpor the monitor but didn't get a definative answer so
gave it
 the old smoke test keeping an eye out for odd behavior or overheated
electronics smell
 coming of the monitor.
 Ran at that res for maybe ten minutes with no ill effect.

Well my purchasing is on temporary hold for now until more immediate pressing
matters
are attended to.
Moving is certainly going to be a hassle but it has lots of pluses just now.
Losing the upstair neighbors and loonie landlady will be huge.

My experiment was more aimed at testing hardware limits and checking out HD
firsthand.
Would a more capable video card with more onboard RAM reduce CPU load a bit?

I was shooting for overkill.
The whole point of downloading that humungous short video clip.

 Well it was because it was a live CD boot and not the hard drive.
 Plays fine at 768x1024 off the HD.

Not just now though with other priorities in the fore I'll surely regret this
generous offer.
If I change my mind I'll insist on some payment in the ballpark of what it's
worth used
but that must await its turn.
