In the case above then the --prefix switch would install mplayer to
/usr/local/lib/codecs/bin which probably isn't in your path.  The default is to
install it to /usr/local/bin which would be equivalent to saying;

    ./configure --prefix=/usr/local

and it would miss the codecs directory altogether.  When in the source
directory try;

    ./configure --help | less

and that will give you a complete list of configure options and usually what
their defaults are.  If I were you I'd just get the newest source and say the
heck with the extra codecs.  I just figured out how to capture from a bt848
card using a soundblaster card for stereo sound (input) and encode that
directly to mpeg4 with mp3 stereo sound.  A conservative estimate is the result
will be 60M/hour which is way leaner then the usual mpeg2 capture of pvr
capture cards (hardware encoded) which often the defaults are high resolution
DVD quality of roughly 5G/hour.  HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!  Also the quality seems
fine given the original quality of the input.  I want to try a VHS tape and see
what can be done there but offhand my best guess is that I can get away with
the same scheme as plain TV capture and it'll be fine.  Either that or get a
better capture card but I doubt that will happen seeing as I really don't care.
 This setup works just fine as is.

Then use the codecs switch to configure and don't come crying to me about
pathetic quality.  Heck even Microsoft doesn't use those shoddy codecs and they
are DEFINETLY NOT known for their quality control.  ;-)

It won't work as that site is only on the wireless network and you would need
to be in range of it and have a wireless card configured properly for that
network (channel, etc.).  This is a local Kumalockasun thingy and nobody here
can handle it other then my neighbour and he still hasn't figured it out even
though I told him umpteen times how to get it working at his end.  Also most
people even if they can get into the network are clueless how it REALLY works
as well as have broken browsers such as Firefox that cannot properly handle
ftp.  Heck even older IE's are better then Firefox at ftp protocol.  Heh, heh. 
Silly people with their sheepleware.  ;-)

I meant out there on the stinkin' web.  I have yet to see a .mov being
streamed.  As a rule they are .wmv's and they work without extra codecs
although they aren't worth the bandwidth imho.  LAN streaming is best, even
wireless.

You don't have to.  Upgrade your mplayer and all will be fine without
/usr/local/lib/codecs.
